We are not a Schengen country, so yes, regardless of the fact that we, and France, are in the EU you need a passport to get to France...and most importantly, to be able to get back into the UK!

You do need a passport. The UK is not signed up to the Schengen agreement - countries in Europe that don't have passport checks between them - eg France and Belgium.

Yes you do need a passport.

Carry your passport

Although the United Kingdom is part of the European Union (EU), you still need to carry a full British 10-year passport (or five-year child passport if you are under 16 and not on a parent’s passport) every time you travel to Europe. This includes day trips and travel by Eurostar.

Many countries no longer check passports at their land borders, but they still expect visitors to be able to produce a valid form of identification. For UK travellers this is the British passport. Remember, your passport will have to be checked at immigration control when you return to the UK.

brandy
Of course you still need a passport everywhere in Europe, even if they never look at it. Wait til you come back to your homeland and face the passport control - makes you feel like a criminal.

The Happy Chappy
You can only fly internal UK or to Republic of Ireland with a driving licence as i.d. Sorry, for mainland Europe you definately need a passport.

Unfortunately, it's Customs and Excise and the Home Office that made these rules. Not the airlines!

I checked the passport office website for you. If you want an emergency one, this is what it says:

# Emergency passport £55.50
# Temporary passport £70.50

you could apply for the temporary one, but you may have a lot of travelling to do tonight.
Good luck

yes. if you want a passport straight away go to your nearest passport office and its about £100 or maybe a bit more to have your passport on that day.

ANF
The theory is that now that we are EC members there is no need for the passport. In reality though a passport is needed for proof of identity. You might be allowed to travel with a driving licence with photo ID but check with the as the decision whether to allow you on board be it boat or aircraft is entirely theirs.

Legally no but airline regs insist on passport so you will have to check with whomever is transporting you there.
