In the UK it's treated as such a special day that even newspapers aren't published on Good Friday (although I daresay SOME of the greedy proprietors will publish "and be damned") ! ! !

Jakerooney
Hi,
Although many people will have the day off here it is not compulsory, most businesses remain open for trading and therefore require staff to work. A lot of people (like me) are given the day off (usually paid) so that the companys can avoid paying overtime rate.

Hope this helps

witeczek2002
In Poland, Good Friday is not a day off work (Easter Monday is), but managers tend to give their workforce free Good Friday afternoons. And in Polish branches of UK, American or German companies they have the full Good Friday off.

In England, there is Both Friday and Easter Monday holidays. It's a nice way to remember the passion of Christ, isn't it ?

I'm so glad this was brought up. I'm really tired of how the business and schools in America keep taking away holidays. I mean come on, I'm so sick of the mindset of "work work work". What's happened to our family values, isn't this a great time to spend with our families. Is this one day off going to hurt anyoen or anything regardless of your beliefs. It's just so irritating. I remember when I was kid, we use to have Columbus Day and President's Day off now we don't get those off anymore either.

Europians seem to get tons of holidays, hmmm maybe I need to move to the UK...hahahahahaha.

Anywho, I think it should remain a day that schools and most businesses (other than those essential) are closed.

If it's religion that is the focus of why it's not recognized, then what's next Christmas? July 4th since it's just an American holiday and someone could get offended or even Thanksgiving. Good gried, the politcal correctness in this nation has just gone too far.

long_luscious_lashes
Yes, I'm in England and we have Good Friday off. We also have Easter Monday off. HURRAH!!!!!
