I live in Russia most of the year so I know lots. I live with 5 Russian men, one of whom is my boyfriend. They are all the sweetest guys in the world and would give you their last rouble if you asked them. They all drink a lot except one, Ivan who is teetotal. They work very hard and play very hard and are fiercely proud of Russia. I've had some heated debates with them about what Britain did in the second world war, but they are all seriously intelligent. It's like having a lot of big brothers and woe betide me if I go out without my hat on in winter.
As others have said, Russians, like all nationalities are all different and I'm describing just the guys I live with although extreme hospitality, pride in Russia and men drinking more than is healthy is a recurring theme I've noticed among all the Russians I've met, which living in Russia, is hundreds.
If you can, go and visit the country. It's fantastic. |

Well my husband is Russian and he is a bit strange but then I met all his friends and they are pretty normal. I was just at the home of a Russian couple last night and they are just as different from each other as anyone in my country would be. The only thing I can think is that they are all rather passionate about anything they discuss. They are also fairly hospitably and the men are very gentlemenly although I have heard that a lot of Russian men aren't so nice to there wives (cheeting is a big issue). As for Russian Jews being different, that is rediculous, some of our friends are Russian Jews and some of them are Russian Orthodox. Although my husband and his best friend are Russian Jews who are Russian Orthodox religiously so it is hard to figure out traits for that.
Recently my husband went on a trip to Moscow and after being away for several years was surprised how miserable everyone seemed. I guess people were quite rude and unhappy. That could just be because of life in general though. |

I used to know a Russian but we lost contact...
He was very energetic, lotsa buzzy and hyper. Annoying at times. But you can't judge a Russian by one only. |

I work with a woman who is from Russia. She is very smart and passionate and quick to laugh. She is doing very well here... and acts like any one else- Works hard, cares about her family, worries about money, bills... life. I work with many people form around the world, so perhaps I am not attuned to any difference in behavior. |

If you are in New York, get on the Q or B train and get off at Brighton Beach. The stores and restaurants are almost all Russian. Go to the library and speak with Russian librarians. On a nice day, there are Russian people selling used clothing, dishes, etc on the sidewalks all up and down Brighton Beach Avenue. At least 60% of the population is made up of immigrants from Russia. |

I've got some neighbors (a couple) who are Russian. They are tall and clumsy, shy but kind. Like anyone in a foreign country, they are good for one on one conversation, but ill at ease in groups. The Russian accent is excellent - well worth inviting them over to listen to their voices which are so low. Another Russian swimming collegue, whom I only see during competitions, is not so tall, but quite as shy. She is an extrememy fast freestyler, but she is so warm and friendly that I don't mind when she beats me!
Overall, I'd say honest, modest, resistant, and driven to succeed.
But that is based on only 3 people... |

Yes, I know who is Russian; I am. However to answer your question, probably, there wouldn't be enough space available. Sometimes it is difficult to describe even one person, and you're asking to describe the whole nation. Russians, like any other people, are DIFFERENT !!!
Old and young; friendly and not; jealous and generous; defensive and offensive; pessimistic and optimistic; patient and impatient; smart and foolish; happy and lonely; cheerful and furious; ambivalent and possessive; restless and lazy; sentimental and detached; sexy and shy; confident and subdued; carefree and vulnerable; warm and cold; weak and strong; ....and ....and ....and and all in between already mentioned qualities. I'm getting out of adjectives... Now, try to capture in words what you are like. Are you always the same through a variety of situations, are you always the same with different people, have you been the same through all years you've lived?... |

does it really mattter whether the person is Russian? or Greek? or Indian? or Swedish?
sure, ethnology perhaps defines a person, but if this is someone you are interested in, why does it matter what the heritage is? Wouldn't the more important questions be: is this person kind, does this person have a sense of humor; can this person be trusted; etc etc etc |

Yes, I met 2 guys in my lifetime from Russia. One was named Alexey Lebedev, the other was named Daniel something. Anyway, Alexey went into the service and he was a perv trying to get into everyone's pants. Daniel was mentally disturbed and told people he saw ghost's faces in windows of his house. |

I'm Russian...
I like myself well enough. I act like most Americans, except I dress better than most students my age (I refuse to wear sweats out of the house.)
My boyfriend is American and we share similar values, except Russians value education more than Americans. |

I help out with a bible study and one of the girls Shneyzanna was adopted about two years ago. I also went to Russia last May. Russians are crazy fun. Everyone says they are so serious and boring but I haven't had so much fun!
I love the Russians! |

Yes.
She is very polite and dedicated to her job.
She is friendly and has a genuine smile and loves to talk about America and learn about America. In exchange for me helping her to improve her English, she is teaching me Russian. |

I'm Russian, so I would be no help, because it's hard finding differences in my self. I know people say that I'm different and weird, but I don't know why. |
