War of Greek Independence, (1821-32), rebellion of Greeks within the Ottoman Empire, a struggle which resulted in the establishment of an independent kingdom of Greece.

The rebellion originated in the activities of the Philikí Etaireía ("Friendly Brotherhood"), a patriotic conspiracy founded in Odessa (now in Ukraine) in 1814. By that time the desire for some form of independence was common among Greeks of all classes, whose Hellenism, or sense of Greek nationality, had long been fostered by the Greek Orthodox Church, by the survival of the Greek language, and by the administrative arrangements of the Ottoman Empire. Their economic progress and the impact of Western revolutionary ideas further intensified their Hellenism. The revolt began in March 1821 when Alexandros Ypsilantis, the leader of the Etairists, crossed the Prut River into Turkish-held Moldavia with a small force of troops. Ypsilantis was soon defeated by the Turks, but, in the meantime, on March 25, 1821 (the traditional date of Greek independence), sporadic revolts against Turkish rule had broken out in the Peloponnese, in Greece north of the Gulf of Corinth, and on several islands. Within a year the rebels had gained control of the Peloponnese, and in January 1822 they declared the independence of Greece. The Turks attempted three times (1822-24) to invade the Peloponnese but were unable to retrieve the area.

No i think it would be wrong to look for the reasons in Turks.

After French revolution, the national independence idea spreaded all the Europe. It's not surprising that a nation like Greeks whom have a great history and culture wanted their independence and fought for it. It was inevitable, would happen sooner or later.

So it was all about Greeks. You can't prevent a nation with that kind of history background apart from establishing their own country. It would have been the same if they were living under English rule instead of the Ottomans.

The thing that the Ottoman Empire allowed the greek religion and language doesnt mean that it created any progres. The opposite, it made Greece live in the darkness while other countries were developping letters and arts...
Mamma li turchi(nice the italian nick name) this means that we had to have them still in Greece?
Or we dont know your feelings about us?

March 25 is both a national (revolution against the Turks) and religious holiday (Annunciation). March 25 is the nameday for Vangelis or Evangelos and Vangelio or Evangelia or Eva.

There is a school flag parade in every town and village and a big armed forces parade in Athens , the capital of Greece .

The Byzantine Empire fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Greeks remained under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years. During this time their language, their religion and their sense of identity remained strong.
On March 25, 1821 the bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in Peloponnese and one more revolution started against the Turks. The people of Greece shouted "Freedom or Death" and they fought the War of Independence for 9 years (1821-1829) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and it was declared an independent nation.

The struggle for the liberation of all the lands inhabited by Greeks continued. In 1864, the Ionian islands were added to Greece; in 1881 parts of Epirus and Thessaly. Crete, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and Macedonia were added in 1913 and Western Thrace in 1919. After World War II the Dodecanese islands were also returned to Greece.

in short they fought their independence in 1821, from the Turks, which was called then the Ottoman empire who had ruled and almost destroyed Greece for years.

Tolis
Sorry but if you are trying to find a reason for the independence of a country you are in the wrong side. People are born free and must remain free and in liberty. Greeks were always free and had to fight for their liberty against the Turks who were occupants as they are now days in the northern part of Cyprus and everybody does like not seeing this (the United Nations included)

Greeks were oppressed under the Ottoman Empire. In fact, there had been a long period when Christian Children were press-ganged for the rest of their lives-something which can't be forgotten under the same occupation, even after Centuries. One must also take into account that historically, the Greeks were known as a grate heroic nation. Taking all of this into account, no wonder Greece was the first country to gain full independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Totally Blunt
The Ottomans treated Greeks so bad that they let the Orthodox church be the leader of the Orthodox community, they let them speak their own language, practice their own religion and live decent lives. Bad, bad Ottomans.

Then, when the wave of nationalism hit Europe, the British helped Greeks get rid of this evil empire. They even got the islands back from Italians and handed over to Greeks. (Don't ask me where the Italians come into the equation. Read for yourself.)

You see, the fight for freedom had no relation whatsoever to the nationalism and the colonialist endeavors that soaked all of Europe in blood. It was all about the evil Ottoman empire. So simple.

Edit: The Ottoman period being a dark age is just another myth of the official Greek history. The Ottoman administration was more forward than many "modern" European ones at one time. Hence the military superiority, continuous conquests and the exclamation: Mamma li Turchi! The Ottomans didn't lose might and power until their borders got too large to manage, until they lost their lead in military technology, until the administration got too poor to support new technologies and until European nationalism hit Ottomans, causing many nationalist rebellions at once.

You may see nationalism as an inevitable step in history and think that the disintegration of empires was natural. Physical empires stuck in Europe left their places to global colonial ones and today: a strong state and its satellites.

But below answerer is right. If the homework is for an elementary school student, you cannot tell all this. You also need a reason for a nationalist rebellion than a simple, "Time had come and we were getting encouragement and help from a colonialist European state." So, you just blame everything on the ex-ruler. So easy. Only, if you exaggerate oversimplification, in time you will have a whole nation full of hate and prejudice, Mr.Zigzag. We wouldn't want that, would we? Booo!
