Yes you do need to have your passport or, if you have one, an European ID.
It is very likely that you do not need to show it, but any person crossing the borders within the Schengen agreement area needs have an official and recognized ID.
And a passport or European ID, or in some cases an military ID from some countries are the only IDs acceptable.
If you not a French citizen you need to carry your ID/Passport with you at all times, again, you will almost never be asked, but if something happens, like an accident, you need to have it on you to show the police. If you are not European, only your passport with the needed stamps or visa will do. |

EU citizens can travel to other EU countries on their national ID cards. Non-EU citizens (and Brits) need passports. |

Only if you are a non-EU citizen. |

You will need some form of picture ID, and I think the passport is the best. |

no-the shengen agreement allows you to travel between those countries no probs. you would be better off having one just in case though.
