Ali kardeÅŸim,
i prefer allways "Türkiye" at Y/A forum because there are some disrespectful person and they insult us with the word "turkey" .
I protest them with the word "Türkiye".It is too normal...

If they asked me, I would prefer Türkeli, which means land of the Turks in pure Turkish.

But the (Arabic?) -ey suffix is so common in Europe and Middle East that I doubt I would have support from other Turks.

Having that said, the -istan suffix has its origins in India, so Turkistan isn't pure Turkish, either.

PS. India was called Hindustani before Europeans decided to make it look familiar.

Buket D
Yes!
otherwise people might think of the animal turkey which really sucks... i mean your country has an animal name... what can be worst!!

Tanju
Hi Ali,

I am always writing Turkiye ...

No I don`t, I`ve never seen it spelt that way....

assessor
have you ever seen any non-Turkish who use Turkiye for Turkey?
it is useless endeavor! imagine you use Turkiye at a formal letter!
I think we must be realistic. we cannot change words of other nations' languages.
turkey is not a very bad word!, it is quite normal bird name. it does not worth making problem. consider very bad last names!

Türkiye is how Turks pronounce Italian Turchia. The word itself is derived from Italian and morphed into Türkiye according to "büyük ünlü uyumu" (a grammatical rule in turkish to distinguish pure Turkish vocabulary from foreign ones. Türkiye, tho not a Turkish word originally, morphed to suit that grammatical rule) This naming has been used for the first time around 800 years (if i recall it right) ago by an Italian scholar and traveler. My source is İlber Ortaylı, a famous Turkish historian. In Wiki explanation of the word is wrong.

I dont see anything wrong about using Turkey. Would we like it if someone wanted us to call İngiltere as İnglınd (England that is) and change it in our language overnight. Naaah

ResidentEvil-Queen-x
No. thats the turkish way.
And i HATE turkish people.
A sick turkish bastard wrecked my family and harrassed us.
Horrible.

No.That's the English word for the country. Why to be insecure about it? Just because some low life morons make fun of it since it's their "being funny" level.
