Before the current financial crisis :
The EU would not have a problem rebuilding FYROM's economy. It is, by all means, a small country and joining the EU, their financials would not affect much the greater picture.
However, the EU does loves stability in every aspect. Stability brings prosperity and wealth.
Generally speaking, stability means that no member state of the EU can have any claims against any other EU member, their economy complies with the EU standards and their laws abide by the EU legislation.
Either territorial or financial claims against any other EU member is a negative prospect against any hope for membership.
A resolution on the name would have to be ageed first (between Greece and FYROM) and the rest would follow.
FYROM has escalated the claims from historical to territorial, despite their interests residing in a cooperation with Greece.
Currently, 30% of FYROM's economy is based on Greek investments alone. One can only imagine how many more Greek businesses would invest in FYROM if only the dispute had been resolved.
The EU also does not like the idea of a country member to have unresolved issues with its population.
A weapon of mass distraction :
It is common knowledge that the only reason for the escalation of FYROM's name dispute is in order to remove the attention from the real problems : 40% of FYROM's population is of Albanian origin and they all dream of a greater Albania parted by Albania, Kossovo and this part of FYROM (....and some Greek land as well but this is another story...).
The only way to control them for now is to send their attention elsewhere... and make the rest of the population focus their interest on the name and not on the time bomb residing in FYROM's 40% of the population hearts.
Take all the above into consideration... put your hand on your heart and tell me... what are FYROM's chances of becoming a stable country, eligible for EU membership, anytime in the next 10 years, and that is if FYROM as we know it today continues to exist in 10 years from now?
During and after the current financial crisis :
I have plenty of thoughts about potential outcomes. I shall keep them to my self as I consider them too scary to even think about them.
Time will tell. |

No, I do not foresee that in the near future. The reasons are that the country has shown no record of political or financial stability.
Furthermore, the potential of the FYROM market for exports/imports of goods is minimal, if any, so investors that are actively lobbying and driving EU decisions will show no interest either. You may wonder how Romania and Bulgaria joined then. The answer is that they had potential (bigger markets, older countries, more political stability) plus they joined at the right time. With the economic crisis, leaders do not want to take more financial liability on board than what they already have.
Iceland went bankrupt, does FYROM have the potential to survive? If not, does the EU want to back state bankruptcies up? You guys have to be realistic: the EU is all about money and financial interests.
I note that the question is in the Greek section, so presumably there is a slight provocation here but word of advice: greek businessmen had invested money in your country; try to be smart by realising where your interest lies. |

If you really are from Skopje, then you should know that for its citizens the name of this country is Republic of Macedonia. I am not surprised by you, constantly provoking troll.
To Trek T: Will you, please, list your sources, which are proving that 40% of the population in Republic of Macedonia is of Albanian origin?
Or may be this percentage is just your unreachable wish? |

It is not about worthing it, it is about having the time to join the EU. I think it will split some day, it is a matter of time. And though, your folk seems peaceful people to me, I think you've 'missed the train' for the EU for the next 10 years.
So look a scenario that I hope will NEVER EVER come true and it is just a silly and wrong opinion of mine!!
1. World financial crisis>> Foreign Investors (the majority of FYROM's economy relys on them) withdraw their invests, in order to be able to deal with the crisis in their basis>> Many people in Fyrom will lose their jobs, they won't be able to pay and preserve the market and pay their debts >>
> Great internal problems (social problems too)>> increasing racism, 'We must blame somebody for this, who's here to blame?' 'Albanians, we would be better without them'.
I don't think that FYROM would have an intention of making a war with Greece (but no one really knows).
I think that Greece is Fyrom's aliby for things that go wrong or not as they have planned them, it is their way to maintain internal pease and a separate existance.
This financial crisis will block the entering of new countries and I think that even Bulgaria's future is unstable (I'm not sure even for Greece). UK and other wealthy countries will try to ceep their 'money' in their land, so that they deal with the financial crisis that they are already experiencing.
US has the same problems of course.
....
I hope I'm wrong! |

Because people in your country take it only for the title and nothing else. You also don't know that your country isnt in the financial stability to help other larger countries, nor would they want to help your with all of your issues, and fighting with other countries for things that is not correct in your view. Macedonia is Greece. Bulgarians are not your enemies or your "brothers". They are your "fathers". Your government needs to become liable, not useless and looking only for title. |

Economy and finance has nothing to do about it regarding how small Macedonia is actually. Brussels is just waiting when Macedonia becomes Kosova #2 to please the whole EU.
People, you are also wrong about ethnic problems! I just want to remind you rather sensitive ethnic problems of GB, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, Estonia, and Latvija; Brussels had never considered them as an obstacle for membership in EU. As for economy; Just recall what situation was in small Netherlands before Euro currency! So there are definitely other reasons for a country to be or not to be in EU!
Just wonder, where’s that Greek veteran, who boasted once he had murdered bunches and bunches of Slavs in the name of European democracy? I think he could be clearer about EU membership.
Looking at all those thumb-ups and thumb-downs (even to Miss USA 2009) and taking into account how much you ‘love’ each other I’ve got a proposal to unite all Balkan countries from Croatia to Cyprus with Capital in Ankara! |

Well,EU needs some criteria to fullfill in order to enter.
On of those is the good neighborhood relations.
Let aprt this, and lets supposse that the dispute will be solved.
They have many thiings to catch up.
SOme weeks ago Oli Rehn said that Fyrom has 8 of those criteria not achieved and plus one more which is the peacefull elections.
SO even if someday they ll join, that will take some years more... |
