From my standpoint, I always marvel at the responses I see from the Turkish Nationals. But I do not think my contributions really represent a 'community', nor do they add up to much of an input.

Turkish citizens are close knit... they have a finger on the pulse of their nation and the people they represent. It's an attribute that is not only admired, but envied.

The strength of a nation does not lie in it's military might or power, but in the average citizens that stand for what they believe. That's Turkey.

It is erroneous to think that there is such a thing as "average Turkish" or average "anyone". In every place I have lived or visited I have found that there are various strata within any society be it French, American, German, Israeli or Chinese.
There is the educated "class", the illeterate, the prejudiced, the ignorant, the sophisticated, the enlightened AND a mixture thereof.

You're all doing a great job! This section is very lively, friendly and down to earth. Feelings I get too when visiting your beautiful country. I don't think education has anything to do with it as speaking from my experience the fisherman was just as friendly as the doctor and I like them both the same way!

I think we do in someways, even tho some has said about education etc. I dont agree with that. Education is very important but then again I can see all back round in people on here(no matter the education level they may have), I can see SOME of the characteristics of my nation..

difference is that cos we speak and write english and most of us been abroad and can see certain things better (like what goes round the world). in a way first hand info. Part from that we are the people of T.C and we all carry the 'yГ¶resel'

about Elite hmmm I am not so sure, I would never put people into categories, its wrong to do that.

I agree with "DejaVu reloaded ", yes we do show some characteristics. Like cheerful,quick tempered, helpful, respectful..

Of course everyone has different political views or beliefs But this also reflects our country doesn't it?

I think we represent the English speaking therefore better educated part of Turkey. Also the ones including me who live abroad have a different perspective due to exposure to
different cultures.

This is the part about the education and life style point of view

If you compare us to the rest of the nation ,we have our common values i.e. the love of our nation, hospitality, love and respect for the elderly etc and belief of same ethical and traditional values but there are also many differences, too since Turkey is not a homogeneous nation; we have our richness that is coming from our diversity.

It would be naively optimistic to think we represent the whole Turkish community both in Turkey and elsewhere.

lol reading some of the answers above, I am almost going to believe that I am some super-Turk who is very different from the rest of the Turks. I won't go as far as saying that we are elite or anything, but surely no group of 40 people can reflect the basic characteristics of a whole nation either Turkish, French or Egyptian.

I think we represent.
and i am really serious about this.
We are representing the real culture. Check the old Turkish culture. They were very modern, female decided for all (that's why still in some villages in Anatolia women decide for the whole family), women and men made meetings together, they drank kimiz, they ate together, look at Turkish dances. Men and women are always hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder. That is the real Turkish culture.
I am from Istanbul yes but i am aware of my country and i have made enough travels to tell you that we represent. When you go to a village in Turkey, you say that you are a teacher, you are a doctor people will highly respect you and listen to you because education is important for us.
Although there are some politicians now who want to manipulate people this will not for a long time.
Now that this subject is opened i am ready for all the thumbs down,too but i have to give my personal opinion as you said this is a serious question.
Why this manipulation will not last:
Because what they are trying to impose doesn't match with Turkey's culture.
First of all most of us have religion only on paper and we are cool people. Most of the people adore Omer Hayyam,Bektasi in Turkey who were the real rebels of their times. We talk about Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi. Ottoman Sultans brought painters from other countries to have their painting made (although this is contrary to religion)
Turkey might be passing a phase at the moment because of some manipulators but we are the ones who represent real Turkey. Turkish people love chatting, drinking, eating, dancing, socializing.
So yes, I believe we represent our country.

No way...Our community is very different from average Turkish folk..Like; beliefs, throughts, thinking style etc..This wasn't a problem for me at first but now comes strange.

But I have to say, we have the same values like Turkish music, food, idioms..

NO, i don't think so.We mostly represent the elit part of our race.we are all well educated and capable enough to speak&write in English.In my opinion we all prefer the european style.But this is awesome because "we" represent our country,Turkey.We know that Turkey's image is not ok around the world and we have the chance of fixing it up.

Good stats, Fatih. I had no idea we had that many regulars. Honestly, I hope this represents Turkey, because I think it represents your country very well, if that is true. Yes, the group is diverse. It would be pointless if everyone felt the same. When everyone is polite about differing opinions, it is great. It is great that this is a place for discussion and interaction.

I can't think of a single Turkish contributor here who makes Turkey look bad. I hope this is typical. :)
