Do you think that Turkey is a "country of the future" compared to the nations of the EU?

What I mean is that Turkey still has strong population growth, and many young people to carry the nation into the future. Istanbul continues to develop and modernize, and the youth influence is strong.

The EU is strong now, but look at how many of its countries have very low population growth rates - or even negative rates. In the future, there will be fewer people in those nations, but there will be more Turks.

So, do you feel positive about Turkey's future? Do you think Turkey will become more and more important relative to the current EU nations?

No they won't be more important relative to the EU countries, NO, what you want- low birth rates and having everyone in europe replaced by turks? no way!

Totally Blunt
Well, the latest article I read quoted from Jacques Attali (I think). Attali says a Europe without Turkey and Russia will be an old continent.

I don't think Turkey without Europe will be much affected. Sure, EU has benefits, but commerce doesn't know unions and borders.

The important thing is to carry the whole population into future, not just the well to do ones.

Slick Rick
Low birth rate is a product of economic growth resulting in more jobs higher prices and less time for parents to look after their own kids , and not able to afford day care.
As Turkey becomes stronger the situation could well become the same.
Alot of women work in the UK even my mother who is 60 still holds a full time job.
A lot of families are in full time employment in UK. when this happens in Turkey the strong family support that they have there will weaken as the newer generations take over from the elder but maintain their work commitments.
Kids become expensive when countries flurrish. all of a sudden they will be demanding PS3.s, laptops, motorbikes, cars and £100 trainers etc.
Turkey will know doubt be a strong country in the future but they do have to develope more industry in technology to keep up. I may be wrong but Turkey's exports are high because the labour is cheap, as more people attend college gaining better skills whist the country grows that could easily change.

At cold war time we protect EU . now we are big bazaar for EU.
At the future I believe EU will divide like Roman Empire.

Scientific productivity of Turkey increases at a great pace.

By now, it is 4 times more productive than the second most productive islam dominated country - Egypt.

Industry likewise is already quite sophisticated and cheap labour is not the only explanation for that. For textile industry for example, India and of course China offer a much much cheaper labour cost in the east. Also in Egypt - another textile country - the labour costs are much cheaper. But textile industry in Turkey is getting more sophisticated every day; investing into its own brands and designers.

The same case is to be observed in Electronics, Construction etc.

Some of the universities are really good, although they are not well known abroad. But their graduates are able to do a lot of things. My personal experiences for instance show that people who received higher education in Turkey are highly respected in CIS and ME countries.

If they don't play much with the secularity accords, we have every reason to believe that this will be the dominating trend.

I agree with hanibal
