Turkey is no less modern than Romania & Bulgaria.

Northern parts of Greece (Bati Trakya) is no better than any part of Turkey with respect to democratic freedom, minority rights and freedom of speech.

Not to mention Slovenia or Malta or whatever those tiny pieces of lands who call themselves a 'country'

After the EU summit held in December 2004, the EU officially acknowledged that Turkey complied the Copenhagen criteria.

No, I don't think Turkey's that modern. But since the EU seems to be accepting (rather against itself) every sort of membership from the Eastern countries, why not Turkey as well?

For starters greece begs the EU to let you in. Germans and French resist the idea. cypriot greeks dont want to have to deal with turkish/cypriots that why they voted no on the Anan project. I have 2 questions though 1)will EU make it after 10 years 2) what will happen if you are not accepeted.

PS They will not accept you based on 1) lots of Turks already in central Europe 2)Yes your religion that why they threw you out with the population exchange of the 20's whereas they accepted people speaking turkish wearing Turkish clothes but going to a christian church.

Slovenia is historically more European than Italy (it was a part of AustrioHungary) and very advanced economically compared with the rest of former Yugoslavia.

Modernisation has nothing to do with being able to get into the EU or not.

No, to be honest. But EU isn't my standard of modernism. I don't think those *big* EU countries are modern either. I find theirs a well-masked barbarism rather than modernism anyway.

In order for me to consider Turkey a modern country, there are a few things to be fixed. The most important thing is that we should accept the fact that Turkey isn't only consisted of İstanbul, Ankara, and other big cities. When people in Mardin or Şırnak start living in the same standards as people living in İstanbul, we will make a great step towards being a modern country. We somehow tend to forget it. We try to cover the truths, but the truth is there. We shouldn't be ashamed of it and we shouldn't only present our modernity by showing off Istanbul.

Health system and education are big issues that need to be fixed first of all. Laws should be reconsidered, and strictly practised. People should be encouraged to be more open-minded and not get killed just because they "say something". There are many things, I could go on and on about. Well, in short I'm not happy with the way my country is being run. And I think we should rather demand our rights and not play the 3-monkeys and pretend everything is perfect.

Turkiye is a whole, and We will join EU oneday. Maybe 10 years maybe 15 years later. We will join EU without divide. It is during time. And I want to ask for you, Is Bulgaria so much rich country ? Is Romania so much rich country ?
I know, Turkiye is not very much poor country. (In fact, I know, you will not answer me, anyway, I asked again to you)

Of Course, I know, EU countries says, you will leave Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic. You must know so-called Armenian Genocide, Do not disturb Kurdish People like that. It so normal. They will always want something.
If we will the overcome diffuculties, we will join EU members.
And then Eastern Part and Western part will be same.
I believe.

Yikes, everyone has such strong opinions! What I am concerned about is not that Turkey should be accepted into the European Union, but that this lovely country should reconsider its desire to do so. Of course, updates of electrical systems, communication systems, laws and such are important for Turkey. But what is more important is the preservation of its historical context, of its vital culture and the protection of its economy; all of which could be in danger if it wants to play the game of joining a group which has not yet proved itself to be of any real use. Turkey is a cultural and geographical bridge between East and West and would be better off standing alone, being stong and developing herself through education and self-discipline.

Türkiye is modern enough for me but not for the EU.

I m sure Türkiye would be a modern country for the EU if;
We leave North Cyprus Turkish Republic,
We leave East Anatolia for so-called Kurdish country,
We accept the so-called Armenian Genocide(France is the 1st one, all the EU countries will force us to accept it next years)

So, I dont want Türkiye to be a modern country for the EU!!!

And I have to add that The Salesman Tayyip is modern enough for the EU.

I been to Turkey quite a few times the capital and some city are very nice and modern, but 60% of the country is very different with the blood feud and the rights for the women's are not modern at all, still 200 years back.

As a turkish guy, i dont agree that Turkiye is enough to be a member of the EU cos we still have some stupid arguments inside. but, if countries like Bulgaria or Romania is thought to be (even from now on is) a member of the EU, then Turkiye deserves a membership much more than them. i dont think the modernism is the problem of the EU with Turkiye Since 1963, Turkiye is applying for the membership and since that time many less modern countries has been a member of the EU. let me tell u what the problem is; "The EU fears of Turkiye!" The EU fears of Turkiye because there is a big population of young people that have a big potential to influence the whole Europa. Even there are many young and talented people graduated from an university but have no job. What i mean is; by the time of joinning of Turkiye to the EU, Turkiye will influence the whole Europa in spite of its all problems.

now, im going to prove what i claimed by saying Europa fears of above. The EU is still talking about so-called armenian genocide, about cyprus which is irrelevant to joinning issue of Turkiye to the EU. many of these problems have to be solved in United Nations, but, still, they find some excuses and apparently, they are going to put us off with these silly trumped-up excuses for a long time until our reactionist government understand that. Are Romania or Bulgaria more developed countries than Turkiye? or Cypriot Greek State has lands in Europa? of course not. And people are talking about turkish laws which they disapprove of, however, for example, France has a law just like a disappoved turkish law in which punishing the people who says "there is no armenian genocide". so where is the indepedence of ideas in the EU?

i mean why are these excuses put on the table? because they fear of Turkiye. let's say we accepted armenian genocide which even doesnt exist, then, what excuse will they find for next?

but, i have to say, we are not succesful and modern enough to join the eu, also, with this reactionist government, we even diverge from who we tend to be...

i think we should have a better relationship with russia or china rather than europeans which see any member of that superior! countries union better than Turkiye...
