Tomboy with girly tendencies

Do you think that eastern Europe would make an interesting trip for a 17 year old girl?

I am 16 now and my aunt said that she will take me anywhere in the world once I am 17. Originally I was leaning towards New Zealand, Vietnam, India or Japan, but recently I have taken an interest in Eastern Europe. I would like to go during the winter, because I love the snow, but would that be sensible? I don't want to go on a vacation and not be able to do anything because of inclement weather.

Anyway, the cities/countries I've been considering are:
Zurich, Switzerland (I know, technically western Europe)
Vienna, Austria
Croatia
Budapest, Hungary
Prague, Czech Rebublic
Poland
Amsterdam, Netherlands (again, not eastern)
Sofia, Bulgaria

Would these locations be, well, safe for a 17 year old girl. I don't want to sound stereotypical, but I know that some of these nations have legal prostitution and can be violent at times. Also, would you consider someone of my age to enjoy a trip like this, or do you think it may be more suited for someone a bit older?

If you're doing more than one country then I would say Prague, Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria!

But if one, the I can easily speak for Prague. Christmas is magical. The Christmas markets are an attraction to both locals and tourists. It may be very cold, but all you have to do is dress warmly. You could do ice-skating, and get back to the place you're staying to recover from the cold or something.

Everywhere poses a pickpocketing problem especially Prague - that's one thing you all should be aware of. Old Town Square is cheaper than New Town one.

I would consider this is a good age to see any of these places, as long as you're with your aunt. :)

If you choose Prague, you can see Orloj, Old Town Square, New Town, Charles Bridge, etc. Even you two can take a day trip to Cesky Krumlov.

If arriving from Ruzyne airport, you must also be aware of taxis ripping off tourists (charging more than its usual costs). I would recommend AAA taxis. There are three buses to and from the airport, that one is 119 that goes to Dejvicka subway station (must be aware of your belongings).

Hope this helps.

You'll have lotsa fun, Eastern Europe is a dynamic mix of old and new. I have not been to Switzerland, Austria or Poland but I here's my 2¢:

• Croatia: Fantastic beaches!
• Budapest: Hungarian is a tough language to read but Budapest is fun so long as the Metro crossing the river has been fixed.
• Prague: One of the most energetic cities in Europe; a Slavic mix of Paris and Dresden.
• Sofia: I love Sofia, but be sure to brush up on reading Cyrillic. It's out of the way, but Veliko Tarnovo, the old capital of Bulgaria, is a fun city. In Bulgaria, buses are faster than trains.
• You're so close to Romania! I wouldn't bother with Bucharest but Transylvania (Timişoara, Braşov) isn't scary, it's rich with natural beauty and architecture.

The majority of pickpockets and beggars in Eastern Europe are Roma, so keep an eye out for groups of Roma teens.

And to whomever thinks that travel is dangerous, you're statistically safer walking around Europe than in the US.

Bon voyage!

There is no such thing as an inappropriate European excursion. If you get to go to Europe, travel, and learn, then you are very lucky. Just be sure to do your research so you dress appropriately, both for the weather and the culture, and use your common sense. You'll be fine.

yes why not?

I think you will be just fine and that it is a grand opportunity. Travelling is the best education you can get.

This would make an interesting trip for anyone of ANY age. Anyone would be able to take something from it.

You have to go to Vienna, great shopping, you'll love it. Overall, I think that a trip to western europe would be more exiting and fun for a severteen year old. Theres just a lot more places to go. Amsterdam is fun, but can get a little dicey if you go to red light district or stay out too late. Colone, Germany is a place that I would recomend. Also the people in Belgium are very friendly and nice to Americans, in Germany they are not so friendly.

All your choices are sound, but DO go to Romania. It is incredibly beautiful during this time. Brasov, Bran Castle in the winter just takes your breath away. Sighisoara, Dracula's birthplace and medieval town. I can't speak for the rest of the countries, but I'm sure each and every one has its own beauty.

Prostitution is only legal in Hungary e.g. - you mention Budapest (and Amsterdam). Europe is safe. The worst thing that can happen is pickpocketing. Just be wise, especially in crowded areas - train stations, bus stations etc. I think you'll love it and you will be a life changing experience for you, especially at this age.

You are a lucky, lucky girl, and your aunt is awesome for doing this for you.

I think you'll have a lot of fun in eastern Europe. There's always something that'll be appealing to anyone even teenage girls. I've heard Poland is a nice country to visit. If you get a chance go to Kaliningrad, which is part of Russia, but it's surrounded by Poland and is a few hundred miles away from the main part of Russia. It's neat. Still very Soviet-looking. But, stay out of Trans-Dniester, which is a region in Moldova that's dangerous at the moment. They still fly the hammer and sickle and I don't think Americans are allowed there. But, nonetheless, Poland's my pick, have fun!

I think that grmany or greece, or italy, ive been to all these place and LOVED IT!!! I am in the military so i go everywhere I would recomend italy it is really fun!!!

grandpa
be SUPER careful.

connect with a group like youth hostel,
whatever church group you belong to,
contact the US Embassy in each country
which you wish to visit and ask them.

i would really recommend being part of a group
or go with at least a few friends.

Lucky you!
I would go to Prague, Poland, and Croatia. Go to Amsterdam when you are older. Zurich and Vienna are expensive. (I have never been to any of these places when there was snow on the ground.)
I have never been to Bulgaria or Hungary.

First of all Vienna isn't Eastern Europe neither,
secondly even if you don't wanna sound stereotypical, you do!!! Since prostitution is legal the places are much safer cause Police checks these areas constantly. Europe is in general a much safer place than the US. Maybe you should go and check some statistics on crimes commited in the US and in Europe and especially what kind of crimes are common.

Mandy!
for ppl a bit older, acctually, 30 yr olds would like that, i think paris france or astria is nice for a girls like you, i also think Geniva Switzerland would be fun, it has grat landmarks an wen i went there last year i had a blast (warning im a little younger than u, but i think these places are for the same age group)

i would suggest checking the web --- Australia has www.smarttraveller.gov.au which gives an idea of problems for travellers ---- i would suggest sticking to central or western europe ---- austria switzerland try italy ---- at least until you are older ---- i would strongly suggest finding a companion to go with you ---- not as protection as a travel mate --- and many of the countries have illegal prostitution which is MUCH worse than legal --- with legal you dont have to be worried about being kidnapped ---- illegal you do ---- best wishes

I know this is completely off, but South Africa is a magical place. It changed me forever, it was VERY interesting, and its resorts are perfect for people our age.

BUT if your traveling to Eastern Europe, Vienna and Amsterdam are great places to visit.

try south africa, have you considered hawaii, alaska, canada. Be very careful about any european country, some ideas about many things are not the same as ours.

Poland, switzerland, and Netherlands would be fine. Why would you want to go to impoverished, poor, crime-ridden eastern europe instead of western? Do you want to get raped?
