Greek the Freak

Do you think the school systems in Greece are bad?

i talk to my cousin frequently and she says that she barely gets 4 hours of sleep everynight because she studies from the time she gets home until 2 or 3 am. she also says that ancient greek is the hardest subject. i know that ancient greek is an important part of our culture and i'm all about learning it but they should at least go easy on them. she also goes to a private school and she says that there they give them better grades just because they pay. shes like a solid 16-17 student and gets 19s. what's up with all that? what are ur opinions?

Our Educational system is f*cked up and it is getting worse. Everyone is to blame without no exceptions: government, teachers, parents and students.
However, it will take hours of typing to explain and I do not feel like it.

The repeated experiments the Governments did during the last 20 years has resulted with people going in and out of universities and being just as ignorant as the day they went in. That is because the system is rotten from the bottom to the top and every one is blaming the other for the failure of it.
The Government blames the Opposition, the Opposition the Government and both the teachers. The teachers blame the parents and the parents the teachers and so and on.The fact that no one assumes the responsibility to get the problem out of the stalemate and do something that will get people educated enough to know what is happening instead of awarding diplomas of no face value and of questionable worth to get a decent job.
The fact that all parents want their children to be scientists of one sort or another makes the competition even more unfair for those that have the real ability and aptitude to achieve an academic career.

The school system in Greece is very bad for three reasons:
1. The primary purpose of school nowadays is to get into university through the national examinations (panellhnies). So school looses its vital role: to prepare people for the life in a community, and to become familiar with many aspects of the human civilization.
2. The government doesn't spend much for education.
3. Teachers in public schools don't give a damn for their students as they work permanently for the state and they get a hell of money from the private lessons they make.

em me
well, you wont get promoted in a job just because you pay.

I don't care what any of these nice people tell you. Primary and Secondary Education in Greece is in may ways a lot better than in the USA. You actually learn the basics and you
don't sit there wondering if someone behind you is going to
shoot you.

As long as Greek students (high / elementary school etc) need to pay for extra private schools (apart from their normal school) I believe something is wrong. But for sure it is good for the pockets of Greek teachers who make some extra money.

Yes it's very bad they are raising people against Turkish people

Studying is good. Getting better grades because you pay is bad.

According to the reports I have read, education in Europe is getting worse and worse, because politicians retract money (as a percentage of the budget) from social services and give it elsewhere. And this results in elitism in education, because wealthy people can afford good education and the poor cannot.

Don't fret. I won't claim my country is better. Because of the higher percentage of young people, it is actually worse. But in my experience politicians need public pressure. I wish you will raise your voices against any politician that undermines education and healthcare.
