As a Greek that lives close to the Turkish borders we most definitely want Turkey to enter EU.
If we put our mutual differences aside, Greece will be the only winner from such a move.
If only it is the 5%of GDP that we spend on defense.... compared to 2,5% in education.
I for the live of me I do not understand why Bulgaria was let in and not Turkey. Well, actually I do but that is an whole diferent story.... |

Hmm I liked the honest answers.
They don't want us and most of us don't want to join. So why still discussing? :D |

Everybody is welcome,
I have no problem with nationalities, or ethnic backrounds *
Besides, the main idea of EU is to unite all European Countries, isn't it?
I hope USA will be out of this :)) |

NO - I am answering as a British and as a person living in Greece. They are more Arabic in religion and ways than any other European country.
Who cares about thumbs down! We can't all be politically correct ... just to be polite!
Gus Buckingham is correct - further down - not just religion, ways but also geography - they are NOT in EUROPE! End of story! |

OF COURSE WE WANT ! |

PRINCE STEFOUN III

Yes, I want.
But maybe they will change their mind and then refuse to join. |

Life is hopeless when you dream.

No. The Greek government wants to. But personally most Greeks dont. I am being honest. (i am waiting for my thumbs down) lol. |

Who knows? If Turkey enters the EU it would probably be a good thing for everyone... Greeks might patch up with Turks (n vice versa) once and 4 all ! :)
It's better to have allies than enemies. If Turks want to be your friend, why say no?
Think positive!!! |

To be honest, I neither care nor wonder what Greeks want, but I am really surprised how some people can be so hypocrite and/or ignorant!
First, there is no democracy without secularism, as there is no stability without democracy. Is democracy not an European value? It seems to the majority of you so, otherwise you would not discriminate people by their ethnic, religious,... difference. Those who say "Turkey cannot be a member of the European Union since the majority of her citizens are Muslim." must be thinking their regimes are not democracy, but theocracy.
Second, how can "anybody" be that much ignorant or hypocrite to say " Turkey is geographically a part of Asia, so Turkey cannot be a member of the EU." How about telling me where Cyprus geographically is?
http://reference.howstuffworks.com/cyprus-encyclopedia.htm
Last but not least, Greece would be one of the last places in Europe Turks want to settle down? Why would a Turk want to do that? Do you think Greece is one of the leading countries of Europe?
PS The other arguments are not even worth responding to! |

We should ask these people whether baklava is a Greek dish or not, I'm sure we'll receive more reasonable answers. Although I must warn, the degree of racism can get pretty nasty when it comes to that, at least we witness some courtesy here. I see simple words 'yes' or 'no' as an answer to this question suffers under blind hatred.
Haha :) surely when Turks enter EU the first country they'd go would be Greece. How in the world can someone come up with something so preposterous? Too much prejudice for a user who calls him/herself after a philosophical movement advocating the establishment of a universal state. Since Turks are subhumans, I guess we can safely exclude them from our philosophical approach.
Thank God being intelligent, unlike being European apparently, has nothing to do with being the descendants of "Turkish hordes" or with any other racial genetic traits a person might contain. |

The real q. is, do Turks want to be in EU. A union which is likely to collapse in 20 years. The funniest of all is, they even tried to establish a unified constitution. Only 50 years ago they were slaying each other and now a constitution. EU exists because some of the "remaining" wise men in Europe decided not to slay each other after all the wars that took place between them for hundreds of years. During the process poor countries like Greece and Portugal were let in. Btw EU asked Turkey to get in simultaneously with Greece but thx to Ecevit (in 1974 or in 78 I assume, cant remember now) we refused, Greece jumped in. If we joined back then I'd have agreed but right now. it's needless, senseless and try hard. Besides if we stop bashing each other (Turks themselves i'm talking about) even with AKP and Kasımpaşalı Tayyip we are gonna do good.
EDIT: Vasiliki mou, they invited Turkey in and Turkey refused to join. It's a fact. I'm not talking subjective here, I'm narrating an incident that has happened in the past.
EDIT2: Also Vasiliki, give us a list of "who can answer questions in what section" so all the Y/A contributers would answer accordingly. Hahahaha! |

Yes, they belong to Europe. |

Macedonia is Greek
|
No, because they have nothing to do with the european civilization and that's enough to say no.
edit: What does Greece has to loose when a few millions of Turks come as immigrants to Greece and stay there forever? How Greek will the Greek islands be if more Turks live there than Greeks? In which of the national issues the relations with Turkey are improving? |
|

I'm Macedonian!!!
|
yes, they should be part of it, as every other country in Europe.
edit: helleneda-- Why do i have an opinion?! lol And you are 3.... or what? |

I personally ( and most of the turks think so) do want to become a member of the EU "christian club"...yes, I say christian club because the EU has always looked down to us because of our religion and treated the turks with disrespect.they have seen us as a plague.even in general politics, they have been unreliable ,hypocritical and dishonest towards us (not all european countries bu most of them).
It has become more like an obstinacy to the some turkish politicians to make Turkiye an EU member.GOD!!I think we Turks should not forget the past and that should show us the way to our future.
They dont want us...and we DONT WANT THEM....so whats still to talk about ?
and by the way...the EU will be history in about 20-25 years anyway..so enjoy you membership while it still exists.
STOIC:
dont worry ,we wont invade your country...but not because we cant...its just because we dont want to...
Cutie...come and start with my toilet at home...but you have clean it with your tounge...ok honey? |

Reasonable Europeans do. And for the above:
Turkey should be in EU, because Anatolia is the cradle of European civilization.
Greeks boast with being the giver of European culture, but even the name alphabet is older than what Greeks claim. It is Phoenician. Aleph means an ox and the ox head has become the symbol of the sound. Aleph becomes alpha in Greek, elif in Arabic. Bet means a house, gmel means javelin and dalt means door. Guess which Greek letters these are. So, if we are talking about the rise of culture, why not take Lebanon into the EU?
Anatolia is the cradle, Anatolia is the passage way and Anatolia is the rival. And that's before religions even enter the equation. If not for the Turks, Europe wouldnot be Europe. If pagan Europa can be the name of this union, the ancient cradle can be a member way before that.
Edit: The "various Turkish hordes" (tsk tsk tsk, do we discuss history like that?) consisted of only 10 percent of Anatolian population. The culture got dominant more than the people. Do you want people to believe that all of a sudden all Anatolian peoples got lost and were replaced by Asians?
And ancient Greece was the intersection of various cultures, including Phoenician, Mesopotamian, Egyptian... "Civilization" didn't emerge out of the blue there, just because ancient Greeks were godlike! Come on, is that how you learn your history?
Edit 2: So wise European citizens don't want knowledge in. Hmmm. That's telling!
You ARE the mirrors of your society, you know that, don't you? I learn a lot on these boards. |

No, and my reasoning is strictly geographical. Turkey is a country that is part of Asia. (fact for ppl that dont know geography) so based on this, why should a Asian country be part of the EU |

No, They are not European and they are not Western and there behaivor in Europe is proof they are not mature enough to join |

LMAO Ok im not answering a question, but I do have to say some of the answers in here are rather amusing, seeing the racists give there opinions an such. Its like watching a Joseph Goebel movie, though he even knew to display inferiority in subtle methods. This doesnt respond to all answers in here but maybe 70%. |

Dear Totally Blind?
I have no argument with Turkey getting into the EU...in time. They are not ready yet. But PLEASE be historically correct. The various Turkish hordes did not invade the area till 1000 years after classical Greek civilization and thus had nothing to do with it. Indeed the Greeks did use many of the things that came from the east. But look what they did with them!
Both the arts and the sciences were clearly developed in Greece to the point that the later Renaissance and Enlightenment got their roots in classical Greece, not in Anatolia. By the way, even Anatolia IS a Greek word. |

Νο they are not Europeans. Greek leaders wants them. Greek people don't. Our country is full with third world emigrants,we don't need Turks. |

The inclusion of Turkey into EU could be a wise political move but culturally Turks are a bad fit for Europe. The moment EU opens the border (if we ever do) we will definitely see a mad dash from Turkey to Italy complete with their gecekondu tents. There's enough unemployment in western Europe as it is... Furthermore, we have already seen howTurks don't adjust well in Germany and France. Having more Turks in western Europe will only escalate social problems in the cities.
To the Turkish users above, BAKLAVA came from the middle east. And if having a DEMOCRATIC country qualifies you as european, wouldn't that make half of Asia and Africa European too? D'uh. |

i wish they would be in european union, dont be blind ,the things between us will be better....so why not?????
its not something that greece has to lose form this.
but i really laugh a lot when i see references about, what history greece had or turkey had
we are talking about european union, not about european history.
if we like or not turkey enter eu,thats all
edit:people of fyrom must be greeks.

I really don't understand HOW can THEY be part of EU.They are not europeans OR act like it!They are uncivilised tramps -and please dont tell me im generalising - we all know its true. How can they be part of EU while they are illegaly occuping a country?People, get real!I dont care if some of you are tired of hearing about the Cyprus problem or if yu dont five a feck about it, but its there. Its 2008 ffs.Its been 34 years...NOT 1, not 2 ..fecking 34,and refugees still dont have the right to own their own homes, there are still missing people ETC ETC ETC.There are MANY things that need to be done FIRST.And if they are ever done,i will still find it VERY hard to imagine them in EU.Even if they get it...I will never consider them as europeans for the simple reason(or fact) that they really are not. |
