Amsterdam youth hostels are the cheapest kind of accommodation you can find in the city centre, but although they can often dissapoint those who need privacy and quiet. Especially when you're coming with a partner and need a cheap room just for yourself and this with a private bathroom, consider well to book some of the 1-star hotels or 2-star hotels.

Youth hostels in Amsterdam indeed offer housing where a number of persons share the same room (or a dorm). The bathrooms are shared too and usually on the each floor. Taking your own towels and sleeping bag may be useful, as some hostels charge an extra fee for the sheets.

Most of the hostels also feature a common eating room, lockers, some board and card games and internet access. Youth hostels are therefore a good option for students on a limited budget, and also a very good place to meet the fellow travellers. If you are travelling with a partner, note some of the cheap hostels (Christian hostels "Shelter") feature only single-sex dorms.

Hostels in Amsterdam are quite busy throughout the year, particularly on weekend and during major events. We recommend making a reservation in advance. On this page are given direct telephone and fax numbers for your convenience, though some hostels prefer bookings to be placed online via a secure server.

There might be some more budget hostels in Amsterdam, but also some that are not fully legal. While we respect their business, we prefer not to include them here due to various security reasons. Please note, rankings for some "new" hostels at the booking web sites may not be always relevant, as it may be easy to rank themselves. It's the best to ask your friends who have stayed there before you make a reservation for any such accommodations.

STAY IN THE FLYING PIG HOSTEL!!!! This is the best all around hostel I have ever been to. Make sure you stay in the one that is near the main train station, the other is not as good. The flying pig has great rooms with there own baths, a variety of occupants per room, a great bar for hostel stayers only, a nice relaxing sitting area made of all cushions with no shoes allowed, there is a happy room downstairs so you can...enjoy the pleasures of amsterdam. its also on a walking only street so there are no cars to deal with and it is centrally located to all the sites and for anything that is a distance away, there is a bike rental place within a quarter mile of the hostel. Stay here but book in advance because this place will be booked solid if you try to go there without reservations.
