Does anyone know a good day out from Brussels? |
We are having a few days in Brussels at the end of October and would like a day trip by train or bus on one of those days. We have already been to Bruges. Can anyone suggest a short trip to an interesting place please? |

Check out Dinant. It's in the Ardennes. Probably one of the more underrated towns in Belgium. The scenery is stunning and it's only a train journey away

I would second those who have recommended Antwerp and Ghent, both are really accesible by train from Brussels.
Antwerp is a really buzzing city, and if you are after a diamond then it is the place to go ! If your budget is more modest, there are excellent modern art and fashion musuems - Antwerp is renowned for its fashion designers, Dries van Noten et al. Its also a great place to shop, drink and eat.
If you are after a more traditional Belgium city and are ruling out Bruges, then Ghent would be a good alternative. Take the tram from the station into the city centre and just wander through the streets. Plenty of stuff to see and do in a day, stopping off for waffles at some point of course ! |

Antwerp is really excellent and only about an hour by train from Brussels. It has a great cathedral, two picturesque squares, a river and is great for shopping and bars.
It's excellent but in a different way to Brussels and Bruges. |

Of course you should go to Antwerp or Gent, but since everyone is making the same suggestions, I'll come up with something completely different.
Take the train from Brussels to Oudenaarde (about every hour on the half hour from brussels north, takes about 1 houre) and visit the city hall, or the cycling museum. rent a bike and go for a ride on the roads along the schelde, or if you like it more challenging, over the koppenberg and the taaienberg, 2 of the "mountains" from the "tour of flanders". and make sure to try the local dark beer, liefmans or roman
wathever you decide, enjoy! |

As you can read there are enough suggestions of cities that you can visit in Belgium: Antwerp, Gent, Leuven, Mechelen, Dinant, Liège, Tournai, Arlon are the traditional touristic cities in Belgium, but if you can do this with your passport you should definitely choose to go to Holland: it's only 1,5h to get from Brussels to Maastricht which is a lovely little town just on the border of Belgium.
Not far from Maastricht is a little town called Maaseik where early October the famous Terracota Army of Xian will be exposed, so you can even combine this with your trip to Maastricht. One danger though: you might not want to return to Brussels if you have visited this part of Belgium... |

Go to Bruges, its 20 minute train ride away from Brussels. Its a charming little historic city in Flanders which has lots of nice bars, chocolate shops, antique markets and beautiful old architecture and little canals. Because its been a backwater for centuries it hasn't changed very much so its a heritage city. |
