Does anyone know about Karatheodoris?

I was reading about Einstein and i found out about Karatheodoris and i felt bad for not knowing the man who was behind Einstein. I just wanted to know if anyone else knows about him. It is sad for some people that offered a lot not to be recognised.
"It should be noted that Albert Einstein in his last interview had stated referring to his teacher that no one has asked him about his teacher who showed him the way to higher mathematics, both in terms of thought and research. He said characteristically that his great teacher was the incomparable Greek Konstantinos Karatheodoris to whom himself personally and the math science, the physics and the wisdom of our century owe everything."

"ottoman" this question doesn't have to do with ignoring Einstein for God's shake. How do some people misunderstand things? I posted this to Greece so some Greeks will learn about it too. You must have some serious issues yourself!

Hi Ancient Spirit,

Yes I've heard of Konstaninos Karatheodoris (1873 - 1950) and here is a little biography (hope you can read Greek).

See also this news extract from Athens AFP,

"ATHENS (AFP) - Greece has received copies of letters by Albert Einstein which suggest that the work of an unheralded Greek mathematician helped shape some of his theories, Greek and Israeli officials said.

Israel’s ambassador to Athens, Ram Aviram, presented the Greek foreign ministry with copies of 10 letters between Einstein and Greek mathematician Constantine Karatheodoris, part of a long correspondence which lasted from 1916 to 1930.

According to experts at the National Archives of Israel — custodians of the original letters — the mathematical side of Einstein’s physics theory was partly substantiated through the work of Karatheodoris, Aviram told AFP.

“The correspondence between the two mathematicians is intensive and quite close,” Aviram said. “At a certain moment, they called themselves in private names.”

The son of a Greek-born diplomat who served as the Ottoman Empire’s ambassador to Berlin, Karatheodoris who was born in 1873 and died in 1950 taught mathematics at four German universities — including those of Munich and Goettingen — and also worked on physics and archaeological engineering.

His scientific papers are in the collection of Goettingen University, and have never been translated into Greek, though a number of American universities have copies of his theories, said deputy foreign minister Evripidis Stylianidis.

The Greek authorities intend to create a museum honouring Karatheodoris in Komotini, a major town of the northeastern Greek region where his family came from."

I don't know why Ottoman is getting upset...........its his hero Einstein who has said that Karatheodoris should be recognised.

I had never heard of him.

I just read an interesting article about him in Wikipedia.

"Carathéodory [apparently the English version of Karatheodoris] inherited a talent for languages which extends over generations in his family. Greek and French were his first languages, and he mastered German with such perfection, that his writings composed in the German language are stylistic masterworks.

Carathéodory also spoke and wrote English, Italian, Turkish, and the ancient languages without any effort. Such an impressive linguistic arsenal enabled him to communicate and exchange ideas directly with other mathematicians during his numerous travels, and greatly extend his fields of knowledge."

Wow!!

In science magazines, like FOCUS of PERISCOPIO you can find articles on Karatheodoris, however, if you google the word, you will find much more than what you expected.

Good luck!

I haven't heard of him but as a greek it makes me proud to hear that behind Einstein there was a greek involved..Ottoman=I guess he is turkish..That explains all!!!!!Mean boy!!!Thanks a lot for sharing this information with us!!

tink
hi girl. there are different versions of the story of what is the relationship of karatheodoris and Einstein.
some say that he was really a great teacher that shared his knowledge and Einstein being smarter used them to discover even more complex theories
some say that he was the one actually made the innovations and discoveries and Einstein stole his notes and published them first.
the most accurate thing to say is that he was involved in the research providing knowledge and guidance

be good
i know konstantinos karatheodoris there has been published recently a new book about him but there should be more to. i do not know alot about his life but i think that at least einstein thanked him because my personal opinion of what i have read about einstein is that he was good but not so great and for some reasonsomebody created the of we know. of course maybe i am wrong anyway karatheodoris was great

I have read somewhere that einstein developed his ideas from some ancient greek text that karatheodoris had translated. I have not verified this though.
