Actuallythe latin alphabet is indeed a Greek alphabet, it is just the variation used in ancient Halkida, not the one used in Athens, which is what was dominant and remained as the Greek alphabet. Hence their great resemblance.
Marcus, the Greek alphabet DERIVES from the Phenicien. It shows some influence, but it is not the same one. The latin alphabet is identical to the Greek variation it comes from. This is not a matter of nationalist pride or anything, it is simply a scientific fact. |

Best to find someone who is Greek who lives near you - to help with basics. Don't go to deeply in grammar at first or you'll get put off learning! Try learning nouns and progress from there.
btw - English alphabet is Latin NOT Greek
as I said to the person who contacted - one cannot state that the most widely used alphabet - Latin is Greek - it was derived from a form of Greek called the Cumaean alphabet,- and it is NOT a 'Greek' alphabet as is used today.
Greek alphabet is a decendant of Phoenician

Going off tagent here, the Latin alphabet is derived from the Greek alphabet used in Cumae, itself derived from the one used in the Greek town of Chalkis (of which Cumae was a colony). This, in turn, was derived from the ancient Phoenician alphabet, as attested -among other souces- by Herodotus, and by the fact that early alphabet forms were sometimes called 'foinekie', or 'phoenician' [letters] by the pre-classical Greeks. In this sense, the Latin alphabet is no more Greek than it is Phoenician.
And to address the original question; yes, I do use Greek. Most Greeks can, with varying degrees of ability. |
