Does travelling the world help give you direction in your life? |
Hello.
Im 26 and a little confused with where i want to head regarding my career and general ambitions. I have travelled Europe a little but I was wondering if any body thinks (or has first hand experience) that travelling around the world and experiencing different cultures helps to give you some perspective and direction in life?
Thankyou!! |

Most definately!
I'm 26 as well and have travelled in Europe (England & France) , Mexico, Honduras, Italy and Australia.
I can tell you that getting outside of what you're used to opens your intellect to accept new things and see a part of what life is like through someone else's eyes. Seeing other things can also give you ideas on what you'd like to do with your life. I went to college to be a teacher. However, after going to London and seeing some things first-hand, I decided to start studying theater. Now I'm a theater-directer and I absolutely love it. I never would have found this if I had stayed where I was and didn't venture out!
Unless you're an introvert who prefers the solitude of 4 walls and naught but a cat, I'd say go for it :) |

I hitchhiked all over the U.S. and it definitely taught me something...slow down and enjoy life because it is so short and precious!! |

sure, travelling not only makes you have a wider view about direction of your life but it tends to give you a much better prespective in almost everything.
Usually people who have not travelled tend to think small but its always better to think big, if you know what i mean? |

personally it is very useful and may help with a decision about work, it certainly helps expand your thinking in life |

I've lived in Europe because of my husband's job. I don't know if it really gave me direction in life but it did broaden my horizons and gave me a new perspective on life in America. (If nothing else, it helps to learn that most Europeans just aren't that impressed with Americans.)
I don't know if traveling will help you find what you're looking for but it's a worthwhile life experience, if you can afford it. |

If you can afford it-GO! you will always wonder no matter what anyone tells you. If you cant afford it, try volunteering some time-pet shelter, kids home, hospital, library, old folks home-this will give you genuine perspective and maybe even some wisdom to go along with it! |

I was in your boat a couple years ago. I have done some world traveling and yes it does help you gain some perspective on life aside from being really fun.
You have to look at a career and your life in this way: A career is something that is going to help you get the things you want and the $ to pay for trips abroad.
What is it that you want to do? Can you do it? Meaning the education and background? If not you should get it.
Picking a career is like picking a mate. Not about the "perfect" fit, it's about the fit that won't drive you bananas. Just think of what you find interesting and understand that once you are doing it, the job may not be interesting anymore, but are you going to leave or make a go at it. See...its about tolerance.
Since it's a constant struggle between $ or happiness for the regular folk out there, ask yourself what you want more. Can you be happy at your job..yes, but it usually comes at a price. |

I'm not sure about direction, as such, but I do think that taking time out from the rat race and experiencing different places, cultures and ways of life can make you stop and think, if only to wonder why your life is so different from this. I think it varies from person to person, and how they relate to the notion of 'difference'. Some people think 'oh, I'm so lucky I live in a place where this kind of luxury is not a luxury', while others think 'I wish my life was as simple and uncluttered as this'. |

Yes, definitely. But I mean really travelling, experiencing life and learning about it, not just moving from place to place. The best thing about travelling in my mind are people. If I have been to a place and have not spoken with the locals - it doesn't really mean I have visited it. Have you been to Eastern Europe or to the Balkans? Have you spoken to old people in the places you visit? They usually have a lot to tell - more and often surprisingly interesting things than younger ones. They are the living history and tradition of a country versus the more or less unified "young culture".
Travelling helps you place your culture and yourself better in the world and gives a new meaning to things you take for granted. Some things then really come out as important and others start to look very trifle and insignificant. Others, you never really thought existed ...
Its a little bit like seeing the world from above and yes - it does give you a new perspective. It doesn't guarantee finding a new direction in life, but certainly gives you better chances to choose it. |

traveling for the sake of traveling dose nothing for your lack of direction or ambition... and if you want to see more and increase your experience to learn about yourself, then forget all of Europe, you will learn nothing... try india, northern china, pakistan, madagascar, or columbia... |
