Driving in Poland? |
Hello
You who have been to Poland or you who are Polish - can you please tell me what it is like to drive in Poland. Is there a lot of traffic? Parking in cities? Car theft? |

Mostly country roads and minor lanes.
Driving is difficult in the cities and traffic can be a real problem.
Police will have you for speeding in the villages and on the outskirts of town. I have been done three times for speeding.
they always wait and hide around a bend just after a speed restriction sign.
They have cardboard cutout cars in some places.
You have to drive with your lights on at all times.
Waggons from Russia and Lithuania are a mega problem they don't slow down when there is not enough passing space and expect you to go down the ditch.
Drunk drivers are very common.
You can find yourself stuck behind a tractor or a horse and cart.
Parking in cities not a problem you can always pay for a secured place.
Polish drivers are by far the worst i have come across in 50 years. The white line in the centre of the road is something they try and keep one wheel each side of.
Car theft: I have lived in Poland for nearly three years and do not know of a single car theft. I have not even read about one in the local papers.
There was a programme on Polish TV where a rally driver said " Remember when you take your car out on Polish roads it may be the last time you see your home"
Don't get me wrong here Poland is a great place, and if you bear in mind that the car coming towards you could have a drunk driver at the wheel its not so bad.
I don't think the drink thing is so bad around the big cities, but in the country where i live almost everyone is on the pop including the tractor drivers.
Watch out for cyclists in the country you can find them down a ditch at 9.am drunk as skunks. the vilage shops open at 6.am and as soon as the cows are milked they are all off to the shop for a good few beers. |

I'm Blue

I'm living there for 2 years now- It depends on where you are. In the place where I'm living this year (Koszalin) the traffic is usually pretty calm, but during the holidays- watch out! But while some places have 0 traffic, others like Białystok have jams most of the time.
Parking spaces are pretty scarce in Poland- not like the huge ones in front of Walmart that we're all so used to. Mostly people have to park on the edge of the sidewalk if they're going to a small store, and even then you can barely squeeze in.
The streets are pretty crummy,I'll admit, because the Polish actually have the same roads that they had back in the early 1900's, ''saving their history'' they call it. The car theft varies- If you're going to Warsaw, you'll have to watch out- car alarms and wheel-blockers everybody. As I told you,it depends on where you are,and how long you're gone.
You can leave you're car unlocked in Koszalin for 4 hours while you're away and nobody will even notice it,but in places like Warsaw- leave it unlocked and un-jacked for longer then 1 hour and you can kiss that shiny new Chevrolet goodbye.
Tips: The men are VERY untolerable of women behind the wheel. So if you're of the opposite sex, watch out, because they'll honk you out of you're mind if you try to pass them.
Drunk drivers are common, and in some places you can find yourself on a no-pass 1 way road stuck beind a tractor or snowplow, taking their sweet time while you're late for work.
Be wary of policemen- most of the time they're just waiting to catch you like vultures circling in the sky waiting for a slaughter...well maybe it's not that bad but I'm telling you- when their fees are low, they get nasty!
When you park on the pavement/normal sidewalks, chances are that some monitor is pacing around waiting to collect your 2 złote fee. Makes no sense to me,since what we're parking on is all run-down anyway, and it's not our fault that the government doesn't have enough money to make new parking spaces.
Don't get me wrong- Poland is a large and beautiful place if you know the right spots. Just watch out for the drunks, watch out for policemen, and you just might make it back home this summer ;) |

Hi , the cities are as busy as here, the police usually wait just outside of towns and villages to catch people speeding, you can usually park half on the pavements for a fee.
Car theft is common and the more expensive your car the more likely it is to be stolen, Tip ! they dont steal r/hand drive cars. yes the roads are deplorable but not everywhere.
whereabouts are you going. ?
There are secure parking lots in every town if staying overnight its the best place to park , not expensive either.. |

Poland is amazing. The country is really easy to get past on roads and the cities are a little less crowded than our usual towns. I don't really know anything about car theft though sorry. |

i was over there 2 years ago, roads are poor quality
taffic levels are slightly lower than ours but the lack of major roads means journeys are slow .
police are very strict with laws mainly because they take backhanders to up their incomes |

Roads aren't like in this country. In this country they are designed for lots of traffic and they last pretty long. In Poland they are poor, they have lots of ruts in and are bumpy. There also isn't much traffic over there. |
