Crete, nice people, great food!

Kisses from Greece, sweety!

Absolutely!

You know Greek Orthodox Easter is some kind of revival of the ancient festivities for welcoming Easter and is a great celebration, where all participate equally and with great joy!
Nature itself participates offering the most beautiful sunshine, light breeze, extraordinary flowers with many colours...

The celebration of Easter in Greece is really profound, and it is rooted deep into the greek tradition and conscience. Not only because it has incorporated ancient cults regarding the Resurrection of nature in the spring, symbolised by the Resurrection of Christ, but also because people actually participate in the passion of Christ, by attending the holiest moments of christian orthodox religion (The Crucifixion, the Burial and the Resurrection, in the last holy week). Each area has its own customs, the people decorate the Epitaphios, they follow it in the streets and often in the sea, they celebrate the Resurrection with fireworks and by sharing the Holy Light of their candles. It is not at all a commercial holiday, like other holidays used in order to end up to a dinner feast. Also, the hymns and gospels read in the Church those days are masterpieces of Greek-Byzantine litterature and music. Even someone with no religious interest at all would appreciate the artistic expression and the atmosphere of Easter in Greece, since everyone takes part in these.
Oh, and finally, the traditional Mageiritsa we eat at Easter is the most delicious food i have ever eaten!!

I always go back to my island to celebrate Easter.

It is a very religious and also very social time of the year when I have the chance to catch up with my family before everything goes crazy for the summer tourist season.

I am very much looking forward to it again this year.

Kalo Pascha !

ngiapapa - you are making me homesick talking about the sun and the flowers !

Kicky
I do, especially back in my hometown with my family and friends!

The resurrection of nature from its winter sleep has been a celebration from ancient times. Greece is at its greenest, with wild flower scents that are magical. The air is crisp, the sky is blue and the odors from the lamb on the spit exhilarating. It is actually the best time to visit Greece and do go to the villages where Spring) Easter is celebrated more traditionally and colorfully. I suggest any of the villages in Roumeli.

magwai
i wouldn't trade it for nothing
it is a time when families get together to celebrate
the lambs on the open fire
children running around driving grown ups wild
I'm a grown up with 3 of my own
Easter is about love
and the beginning of spring
and lots more

Zoopy
We never go to church in Easter or do any of the traditional stuff except for the lamb! The only reason I like Easter is because its a great occasion for my family to get together (we all live in different cities/countries). And I also get to eat my aunt's cooking which I crave all year round!!!

It depends. I've spent a few Easters in Greece. I was bored in Athens because everybody leaves the city. We went to church at midnight, but since they are working on the major church, it was held mostly outside and you couldn't see/hear what was going on.

I spent another Easter in my friend's village in the Peloponnese. It was great. We roasted lamb and kids were setting off fireworks outside throughout the entire church service. I've never eaten so much food in my life--it was even more than an American Thanksgiving. People kept stopping by to see the Americans and practice their English skills. We had so much fun.

To sum, I'd recommend spending Easter in one of the villages if you can. If you are stuck in Athens, most shops will be closed.

Not really - unless you like lamb (the traditional sunday easter dish) and unless you like going to the church at 10 to midnight on saturday night and leaving at 3 minutes after midnight with a candle, having heard really nothing of what the priest says, claiming that you have participated in a religious celebration.
However, Easter is great in Athens, because the majority decide to go on holiday and the rest can enjoy in peace the spring.

never been to Greece so I can't say, however I have some friends who are from Greece and they still have family there and I've heard about it, I think it would be nice to be there one year just to experience it, but I don't like to travel a lot and I am a real homebody so once would be enough.

Greek Orthodox Easter is an acquired taste, at best. And accommodation is too over-priced at that period.

NO! WHY?

Not really. I don't like the Orthodox Church and it's money making schemes around Easter. However at Anastasi (Twelve o'clock Saturday night before easter sunday) is fun if you can get over the tremendous noise and that wierd burning of a hanged Judas.
