Erdogan and Gül's wives' obstination in wearing headscarves during international summits? What's going on? |
http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/dunya/11364262.asp?gid=229 Additional Details @Sarah Lucy : Of course, every woman is free to dress the way she wants... But the headscarf issue is not "just" a dress, it is also a symbol of misunterpreted Islam, of "political "Islam.
In my family, no woman wears headscarves, and most of Turkish women don't wear headscarves either...
But because of those leaders' spouses, the whole world thinks that everyone in Turkey wears headscarves.
By the way, being Muslim ( or practicing the Muslim religion or any other religion), should never ever interfere with our politics...
Being a real Muslim and an authentic supporter of Laicity are not uncompatible things at all...That's what I am... |

This is a very good question. Thanks for asking.
You are right ! I am Turk, I absolutely know what you mean.
It hurts me a lot! But I am still hopeful that we are going to be able to get back our country's prestigious values which were given us by the great leader- ATATURK. Let's cross our fingers.

This is a very sensetive subject. So I'll try to do my best.
I don't like headscarves. When I saw the photo, I thought that the only non-modern woman was ours. BUT I respect them. I don't want them to take the headscarves off etc. They can live what they believe.
I give importance to their brain more. But their aim is clear (political islam), that's why I don't support them. |

Yes,there alot of covered women in Turkey even though its very modern. However the headscarf can be very Beautiful to,with many colours and designs.
I dont know much about the politics of Turkey, but i was told Ataturk gave women equal rights and it was he who westernised the country,so i could see if many people find Muslim dress offensive in a political summit.
Its not that big a deal surely,as its womens freedom to wear what they want,id go nuts if someone told me to change my clothing to fit someone elses needs :O

Oh sorry,i said already i dont know much about politics of Turkey,i thought headscarf was just a normal part of religious dress? The same as a Christian cross around the neck or the Jewish headwear. I didnt realise it was a sign of something negative :(
I think everyone knows that Turkey is a Muslim country anyway,so why should it matter if she wears the headscarf? I wouldnt want to have ties with someone else if they wouldnt allow me to wear a simple cloth around my head :((
The full covering of the body in Islam i think is wrong and disrespectful to,i think its extreme.

I didn't expect that they would take the türban off just because they are in an international summit. They are what they are...
A few months ago, I had a very interesting discussion about the türban issue. It was with a Turkish woman who would never wear it by the way. She said that it's discriminatory to ban women from the universities just because of wearing the türban. Why? The türban symbolizes an attitude and both of us are against this attitude. But let's not forget this (that's what that woman told me): A man with the same attitude or even with a worse attitude can go to the university and a woman can't.
I had to admit that she was right.
Back to your question...
What's actually worse? The wives of Gül and Erdogan wearing the türban or the fact that Erdogan and Gül are at the head of the Turkish state? |

i'm thinking she looks too religous for Turkey it also refers different understanding of modernity for some people but it's not my place to judge their beliefs |

Don't worry. The world isn't going to judge Turkey negatively just because the first lady wears a headscarf. They are not forced to wear it, are they? It looks more like an expression of religious freedom - and that itself is more respectable that being forced to dress in a certain way for whatever reason. |

I don't think that wearing a head scarf would be viewed negatively by the western world. I don't judge Turkey badly because some of the women choose to wear head scarves. However, I can understand why many of the Turkish people were angry about the wives of the Turkish leaders dressing in the way they did. The head scarf can be fashionable as well as being modest, and a way to show respect for the Muslim culture. However, based on the picture in the article, and the general attitude of that summit, I think that her decision in clothing and the way she wore the head scarf was negative, and showed Turkey in a way that does not reflect the country. Contrasted to the fashion forward clothing of Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni, it looks like she went out of her way to try to dress unfashionably and backwards. |

i totaly agree with ırmak.i don't like ,too.and she's true about akp's political aims.you can't imagine how sad to be call islamic and unsecular country around the world.especially who says it even he/she haven't read one thing about turkey.how do you feel when somebody come over to you in the other countries and says why don't you wear headscarfs or why turkish people always fight with armenians or kurdish people.but in our life we live in peacefully.we have armenian family friend and every year they come here.and we didn't even talk about it once.some people do things and we have to be responsibilities because of them.i hope one day our PM will be changed and we can show how we are a secular and our real life with more truths. |

What should they do?, wear it in Turkey and take it off in other countries? I find it extremely difficult to understand how on earth a minority in Turkey still thinks they know what's right and wrong for others. No one else in that summit is worried about the first ladies' head scarves but you here in Turkey. Whether you like it or not quite a few millions of women in Turkey CHOSE to wear head scarves and that's just fine. Do you think they will like us better if we were represented by women without head scarves? Do you realize that you guys are obsessed with this head scarve issue. Get a life. |
