London, Venice, Rome, Prague, Berlin
I think these are all different enough that you will take away something completely different from each one! However, I might suggest you choose a smaller centre in Germany, as you might be tired of big crowds and want a change. We closed our eyes, pointed to the map and choose Heidelberg, and we loved it, very beautiful, with a castle nestled into the hill overlooking the town, very quaint and beautiful! Another small place is Salzburg in Austria.....the sound of music tour!! It's a classic!
whatever you choose, have fun!! |

Place I' haven't seen are Edinborough, Madrid, Athens or Berlin.
Dublin was nice, Amsterdam ok,
London - not good for the budget, but great for looking around.
Paris has some truely lovely buildings and things to see (and also not cheap)
Rome different feel to Paris, but has Roman history feel and nice to roam.
Venice - well its so different to all others you have to see it
Barcelona - great Gaudi Architecture to soo thats so different (I only had a day here)
Prague - Just lovely.....cheaper than other other cities too. One of my favourites.
I also like Dubrovnik in Croatia too, cheap, stunning and different. |

Well, that's a really difficult one! All mentioned cities are really special and worth one or two visits.
Paris and London are, of course, THE european cities, but also the most expensive. So if you're really on a smaller budget you might skip one of those. I would skip Paris, because I don't speak french, and it's said to be much nicer when you speak the language there. On the other hand, London is even more expensive, but anyway...
Barcelona is a must-see for me - the beautiful gothic old town, the special Gaudi-Architecture, the modern Architecture along the beach - and of course the sea! No question. And nicer than Madrid (which is THE museum city in spain, so if you like museums more than walking through a cities beautiful architecture, head there).
Prague is arguably the most beautiful city in europe, but if you go also to Barcelona it's not a definitive must-see, because they share some similar beautiful gothic buildings.
Either Rome or Athens are of course a must, if you are interested in old culture. I would choose Roma in first place, because it's more beautiful and romantic, but also a bit more expensive.
Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Dublin are not as big as the other cities, but have their own special cobble-street charm - Amsterdam is a bit (not really) like venice with all it's canals, so I would choose Amsterdam instead of the more expensive Dublin, Edinburgh and Venice. It's also a bit more charming I think.
I wouldn't go to Berlin, cause I'm living here ;)
- anyway, Berlin is a special case. It isn't as beautiful and romantic as the other cities (nevertheless, there are some really exceptional beautiful streets), mainly because of WWII, but if you're interested in late european history, in art in general, and in young, alternative, laid-back avantgarde-lifestyle and modern architecture, you'll have to go there. Together with Prague and Athens, it's also the cheapest of the listed cities.
So, for me: London, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam - (and Berlin if I wouldn't live here).
Hm.
But Prague and Venice (even if it stinks sometimes cause of the muddy brew in the canals) are highly recommendable also.
No, I can't choose only five. Seven is minimum - and what is with Vienna (!), Lisbon (!), Naples (!), Stockholm, Riga and Budapest...
Phew, I'm really lucky, I'm not in your place ;) |

Venice - Museums, food, pedistrian friendly (no cars), history. Stay in Vincenza for cheaper rooms and take the train in. After you visit the famous St.Marks Plaza, be adventurous and explore the other islands. Less crowded. City boats are cheap and quick transportation while offering great views along the canals.
Paris - Musuems, food, culture, great walking city. Learn to use the Metro and it will give you cheap and quick transportation. Favorite musuem: Orsey. Created in a coverted train station, it has paintings from all the great masters of the impressionistic era. Second favorite: Sewer Musuem. Sounds gross, but it's actually quite amusing. Musuem is in one of the major Parisen sewers. Bring nose plug.
Madrid - Great night life, museums, reasonably priced lodging. Old downtown has been fixed up over the last few years. Great walking, people watching and food. On Sunday morning there is a big neighborhood market covering about 15 city blocks. Everything you can think of is for sale. Prado museum is free on Saturday. Day trip to the medeval towns of Toledo or Segovia.
Amsterdam - You can get anything you want in Amsterdam! Rent a bike and cruise the city. Great art museums. Coffee Shops (pot) if you're into that (note Cafes have only coffee, coffee shops have coffee and pot), much night life.
Rome - Yes, it's touristy, but it's one of the cradles of civilization that must be seen. Visit Vatican even if you're not Catholic,. Get up early and beat the lines to see the Sistine Chapel. Off the beaten path is the catacombs. These are underground burial chambers where Christians were buried in the 2 - 4 Centuries. Bus accessible, just outside the old city wall.
Have a good time! |

I'd leave out:
London, Edinburgh and Dublin (quite expensive accommodations and partying, and Edinburgh is anyhow boring)
My first choises would be Berlin and Prague, as they are very lively and cool. Prague is probably the cheapest one on the list.
Sights in Rome and Venice are fantastic, only Athens comes
close (from your list).
Madrid and Barcelona are great but they are annoyingly hot in the summer time.
Paris is great in many ways, little bit on the expensive side maybe.
Amsterdam is also live lively.
If I could add two cities to consider they are Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. They are both affordable, have great historical sights and very lively nightlife. They're also close to each other (you could take a river boat on the Danube which is a great experience in itself). |

My choices would be:
London (expensive but SO much to see there)
Amsterdam
Rome
Venice (very romatic)
Paris (also romantic)
Those are the main cities I would say to go to for a first trip... all of the ones you mentioned are absolutely worth seeing at some point (I've been to them all except for Athens but from what I hear it's also phenomenal). I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip! |

London, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Prague.
Start with London. One of the reasons for that would be a cheaper flights from US, youll get plenty of great deals all year round. Tour Amsterdam and Barcelona next while you still have energy. Top it off with Prague and Rome last which will take your breath away with the history and architecture. |
