it's a magnificent, wonderful country...
I backpacked around Turkey for 2 months once...
It has everything, great food, amazing history and monuments (places like Ephasus, Troy), wonderful coasts, mountains...
and the people are great too in general.
I highly recommend it to you.
But buy a copy of the Loney Planet Turkey or Rough Guide to Turkey first...
BTW, I travelled round the country on the Fez Bus 'hop-on, hop-off' tour and stayed in hostels, so I only spent about $25 US a day :) |

If you go to inner part of the country, people are more friendly and more hospitable. (But do be carefull in Istanbul. Can be compared with NY)
The History is breath taking. Did you know that Ottoman Empire didn't force people of the countries that they invaded to convert to Islam or change their spoken language!!! If you go to the south of Turkey you will see the remains of many civilizations. The tombs of Kings!!!
You have to go to Turkey to understand it! No book can ever tell you Turkey... |

FACT: Many people feel a shock when they visit Turkey. People are very ignorant of this country and when they visit and see how beautiful it's they feel a great shock. Many Europeans don't know a s.hit about Turkey but always they have a comment. Americans are even worse about that.
The fact is, you need to be careful when reading about Turkey. Do not believe in what random people say, like bigwan above. Does it sound real to you? I wouldn't believe it even I were an alien from outer space.
Read reliable sources. Read good books, visit the country, ask the Turks, but never ever trust random people.
This is a good fact to know. |

The animal? It's a bird, you can eat it. It's not a good flyer, it's bloody ugly. It's as stupid as a Dodo and you can buy the meat from this fowl at butchers and supermarkets.
The Country? It's situated on the East coast of the Mediteranean Sea and on the South coast of the Black sea. It's region is where East meets West. It's capital is now Ankara although it used to be Istanbul. Which used to be Constantinople. It was once part of the Persian Empire. It's where the city of Troy was located and is part of the story told in the Iliad by the greek story teller Homer. |

I found that when I returned to Turkey that I didn't care for many of the Turkish people...They were like sheep. Just following who ever lead them around. So slow in getting any thing done. Narrow-minded. The ones that are "rich" is because they do business like Europe, or America. Koc for example. There is no customer service here, and no one stands up for their "rights". The Turkish women are selfish, they don't understand the concept of "building" a life together. It's all about me,me,me. Then they wonder why more of the Turkish men play around or are marrying foreign women. No it isn't always for the passport. Many of them continue to live in Turkey... |

Although Efesus and Troy are ancient greek monuments, the fact the Ottoman empire didn't force its subjects to convert to islam is a lie (at least for most of the Sultans) and the fact that hannibal overreacted a little bit (I thought swearing is bad) ,I believe that you must be covered by the anwser of HOTTurk or smurf's anwser if you meant the bird !
I believe that Armenian ,Greek-Pontiak ,Kurdic (Kurds are a different nation that turks)genocides did happen in the early 20th century,as a try to cleanse the old Ottoman Empire from the many nations that it included(maybe if I was Kemal and I was trying to keep Turkey alive I would do the same thing),also Turkey should find a better solution than invading Cyprus in 1974,but again, like mindtrick said, you shouldn't hear what everyone sais... |
