For Travelers: I am looking for a peaceful yet interesting city in Italy for my mother and I to visit?

I am meeting her in Italy in mid-April '09. Any suggestions? She doesn't want a city with a ton of tourism (Rome is out)...one with great food and drink and sights to see. Any suggestions? Thanks!

In mid-April you're not going to find so many tourists in Rome, anyway one of the most underrated Italian city for tourism is Turin, which is also one of the capital of food (although for sure Naples is more known for that) and wine and coffee (and when not Turin, just nearby); Turin is ancient, being established by the Romans and was the leading force behind Italy's unification during 18th Century.
The countryside out of the city is beautiful and in Venaria (a city in the province) you can visit a Reggia which is even bigger than the Reggia in Caserta, which is known as "the Italian Versailles".

Try Itals Lake District, its beautiful. Or if not then Chioggia is beautiful too and a little more busy

The Amalfi coast is a beautiful place in Italy its near Naples and isn't very touristy from what I can remember. It has some incredible vistas.

Agree with suggestions of Italian lake district, smaller towns in Tuscany, Umbria etc.

Venice is great if you get off the tourist trail, and that's easy. To avoid too many tourists get to sites like Basilica San Marco, Doge's Palace, Rialto Bridge, early in the day. Take trips on the vaporettos, especially to the islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello etc. Get off the beaten track and eat in local cafes and bars, much nicer and cheaper than the tourist traps.

Cinque Terre is nice, but now very, very touristy. Ignore what 'Matt' says in his post, these are not islands, but five little towns on the mainland connected by hiking trails. But these get quite crowded now.

San Gimiagno
Fiesole

these are small hilltop towns and very charming in the Tuscan region

All of Italy is a tourist attraction, but April is ahead of the main tourist season and no place will be too crowded. Depending on when you go Garda Lake can be packed or almost empty - there are a surprising number of German tourists in April some years. I live about an hour south of the lake and particularly like Sirmione and Malcesine.

There are a number of smaller towns that you might find to be a bit quieter, but still have a lot to see and do. You can easily get from any of them to the more touristy areas for a day if you're interested.

Mantova, Padova, and Ferrara all have fairly large old towns and are close to Venice, Verona and Garda Lake. Bergamo has a very nice Alta Città and is close to Milan and Lago Como. Parma is also a nice city - there are several interesting castles within a short distance of the city. Arezzo, south of Florence is very nice. One of my favorites is Perugia - there are old 14th century buildings underground beneath the current city. You can see Assisi from Perugia.

I spent 6 months in Italy, going from east to west. The furthest south I went was Roma. I really never once felt threatened in any way anywhere I went. You will feel safe there, but of course you could get pickpocketed anywhere. It's a lot of walking. I would recommend really looking into Verona (Where romeo and juliette takes place). It's like going to rome, but without all the tourists. They have a huge collesium which is much more intact than the rome one. I enjoyed it there. Also, look into the Medeival city of "Volterra," which can only be accessed by bus or car. It is wonderful for a day trip. Florence and Venice are no brainers. Just go! I walked Venice each night for weeks and never felt in danger. America is much more dangerous.

I would say go to Milano or Venice. But chances are where ever you choose to go in Italy, it will all be interesting! Everywhere you go is beautiful and has great sights to see and even has good food.

I went on a tour of northern italy in 2006 with my high school. Most of the places were beautiful but all were different.

Milan = The miniature New York City. Great for shopping

Florence = Same as Milan but more World War Twoish. Great place to see statues and site see.

My suggestion is to check out Venice and Cinque Terre.

Venice was my favorite place because it had everything, and was all on water.

Cinque Terre, "The 5 Islands" Was really cool and fun to relax at. But the islands were small and were on mountains. Each had a single road you had to walk up for a while. There was one of the 5 islands that was flat though. It had a beach and the water was clear. There was also a chaple of St. Peter I believe there. It was like a mini California. My friends and I got some really nice foccacio at the foccaciaria there.

You'll get your moneys worth at venice though. There's much more to do and see there. Plus there are a lot of caffe's, all different and have different prices. Many artists on the street. A lot of blown glass. The restaurant we went to was really cool. My group ended up singing with this big Italian family in the restaurant. I want to go again!
