Funny thing between Greeks and Turks? |
In Greece, the Greek Orthodox church has been declared the prevailing religion, essentially making it the official religion with rights equal to that!
Whereas, in Turkey, even though the vast majority of people are Muslims, Islam is not the official or 'prevailing' religion.
I'd expect the Greeks to be more secular! land of Aristotle...you'd think it'd be the Turks with an official religion... what do you guys have to say about this? |

So what? Who cares what you expect or not? If a country has no official religion it still dosn't mean there are no fanatics in it. There are no Christian Orthodox fanatics as far as I know, but Islam and terrorism is equation mark, sadly for you and your expectations. |

That's normal. They are two different countries.
I mean, They don't have to make things similar, just because they're neighbors.
And both countries have their own historical, cultural and sociological reasons for that.
Reading history may help you find an answer to your dilemma. |

What you say is true, and Turks have escaped being an Islamic state thanks to their leader Kemal Ataturk who proclaimed a secular state.
Whereas Greece never faced a problem with the religion being official, because every religion is free anyway, and our religion would not impose laws, type of clothing etc. as in Islamic states.
Also, in Turkey religions are free, but the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate is facing threats, attacks and violations of its rights and fortune a lot in Turkey. So it is in practice that we must judge religious freedom and not in theory. |

WHY do we have to have a relegion any way? ...you know they say that if you want to get from A to Z.. the shortest path is a straight line... so why do we go around in circles? it seems to me that every generation repeats the one before it with out realizing its goal.. and the more the generations generate this practice..the more we lose sight of what was our original objective..i say belive in GOD or the all mighty power of LIFE as why we exist and treasure it and your body as a temple and look after it as much as your consecious allows you too considering todays avariances..after all humans are weak so do your best is what god would want from you he gave you life now respect it....everything other than that..is man made...and that is our promblem........we should give each other hope and courage..and not try to find faults in others.....that is what life is about.. every day is a good day and the next day gets better...treasure them all... |

The Greek Church had been there for the Greek people when we were under the rule of Turks. Greece was under Turkish occupation for 400 years, at that time most of the Greeks were uneducated. The Greek Church was our only link to our history of the past. Back then religion and language were the only link among the Greek nation. Also, the Church had a great role in the Greek revolution and all the other difficult times of the nation, for example the struggle for the freedom of Macedonia and Cyprus.
All religions are not the same. Every religion has different ideas about life and a different contribution to society and history. Islam for example is dangerous for an open European or western society and that's why the Turks are trying to control it but they have been failing for the last 80 years of this experiment, simply because they are not Europeans (their civilization was never European).
Christianity has been part of the European civilization since the beginning. As part of our culture it will be there for as long as there are Europeans. I don't know if you feel shame for Islam. I will always be proud of the men who came out of the religion of my fathers even if I don't believe in the existence of God. |

Don't know much about Greece or Greeks, but the Turkish people have not abandoned Islam. Turkey may not have an Islamic government, but that is because they decided nearly a hundred years ago to separate religion from politics/military. The Turkish people are free to choose whatever religion they like. Many are practicing Muslims of one persuasion or the other. Others identify themselves as Muslim but don't practice it -just like the majority of British people who identify themselves as Church of England but don't actually go to church. In Turkey the Islamic religion is freely available, with mosques everywhere and calls to prayer still a regular, common and abundant feature. But unlike some other Islamic states, Turkish people do not discriminate women and Turkish women can choose how independent they want to be. |

It isn't funny. It is history.
Rum Orthodox Church was the organization that let the padiÅŸah (sultan) rule his Orthodox peoples during Ottoman times. When nationality wave struck, again this church was the foundation that Greek people identified with. You can think that Greek Orthodox Church is what defines Greek identity.
However, even if Islam is one of the factors that defined Turkish identity, Turkish language and Anatolian culture are stronger influences. Moreover, as Islamic identity is hijacked by Arabic nationalism, it is essential for us to define ourselves with our culture rather than our prevailing religion, as Turkish culture has nothing in common with the Middle East Arabic culture. Our majority happens to believe in the same religion, that's all.
For people in doubt, think about this: there are Orthodox Christian Arabs in the Middle East. Do Greeks identify their local culture with their Arabic culture? |

Yes, but even though is the official religion doesn't ivolved in laws (like Saudi Arabia, alcohol,Sharia, etc).
Official religion doesnt make someone more or less secular. There are no laws because of religion, we dont have to dress in a particular way, etc.
I agree with Cpinatsi, in everything she wrote.
Also I d like to say to you that in Greece there is a tottal freedom of religion, and if you have a visit here you ll see all kind of religions to be practised here.Muslims, Cahtolics,Protestants,Jewish,Jehova's withnesses,Mormons,etc.....
For Keyser, who told you that accepting Jesus makes you go in heaven? You find CHristianity easy because you don't know it well. And because we don't blindy follow it ,doesn't mean that Christians do in their daily life is what their religion say to..
@Yes, its Vasiliki, in Greek script.
No its not that way, accepting Jesus doesn't supossed to be something that makes you go in heaven,I am positive about it,for sure.
Never heard this from any (Orthodox) Christian, neither from the hardcores, nor from the "just believers".
Accepting Jesus as a seviour is actually a basis of this faith, not the "ticket" to heaven |

Well,Islam in todays world isnt a progressive religion and Christianity is far far more easy going and tolerant.Christian society has evoloved over 100's of years to what it is today,Islam hasnt really moved forward atall.Turks have moved forward,Islam hasnt.
You could ask the same question of Greeks, about thier proud history and everything they cherish why they have abandoned thier old gods and become a christian nation.
Yes they say Islam had a golden period but that was in a far distant past, and even then the Islamic golden age was fueled by other cultures at the time and thier ideas.
Im babbling, but in my view being Christian is 'easy'.You can do whatever you want in life, but if you accept Jesus as your saviour your going to heaven right? If only it was so easy for Islam.
ADD-To the Greek person with the hand avatar,Vasaliki?
Isnt it common knowledge that in Christianity accepting Jesus Christ as your personal saviour gets you into heaven? Its the calling card of the faith,im positive about it. |
