CONGRATULATIONS ARCHER 1 !!!!!!!!!!!
I could not have said it better myself. I agree with you 100%.
Thanks for having the guts to say what you did because it is absolutely true and people get ofended with the truth.
http://www.hummingbirdpublications.com for the love of Greece

Glikia Elaine i agree with you and that is the reason I NEVER answer their questions and i have statet that fact ,ignore them totally it's of no use in Greek we say 'i siopi mou pros apantisi sou' and that allways works.
On the other hand i feel that if you are in the forest you ca't see the trees but we are not in the forest and we love this forest so much and it really hearts to see our beutiful Greece
the most delightful place on earth used and abussed by the people that claim, that they love Greece.

I have a cousin who lives in Australia. She really loves Greece and was considering the same as you.But of course came to her senses...She has a great job there with plenty of opportunities.I know people who have all the degrees in the world and they either work outside their field or they can't find a job at all or work 12 hours a day..No , you better just visit Greece....

It all depends on your determination. It is difficult but if you know what you want and you really love it you will succeed not only in Greece but everywhere even if the odds look against you. Good luck to whatever you decide! :-))))

I live here in Greece but was born in the US and I'm considering leaving to go work in another European country or the US...I do think it would be a mistake to come and work here...the only people who are a bit more lucky than the rest are probably those working in public offices and jobs but it is pretty hard to get in there (if you don't have connections like someone stated below)...the minimum wage is 630 euros for a 40 hour week and if you consider that in athens your rent will be at least 350 euros you can see what i mean..Greece is a wonderful place for vacation but probably not that great if you wanna make a living....maybe you should consider coming to live in greece for a year and see how it is and make your own decision...it really does depend though on where you are living now....

I'm sorry to say that your parents are right. Look carefully at Asimenias answer. It's totally right. I would go into more detail, but.. anyway.

Elaine
Were are you living now? You need to consider what Archer and Pixie told you.

ADDED: By the way Litsa, most Greek users here have a very balanced opinion about their country. We live here, for God's sake, we know the problems better than anyone else. You can see that if you read questions which criticise our country, but posted by normal users and not trolls. But we DO get angry when questions about Greece are asked in bad faith.

Well it depends where you are moving from?

But generally it is true, there are not many job possibilities in greece and the salaries are relatively low compared to the cost of living.

I mean you can try and see for yourself.....

As far as it concerns the living expenses in Greece and the salary of an average person, there is negative correlation between the two variables! I am Greek - Cypriot, l love Greece and my home island Cyprus and l don't want to live anywhere else but l see that l cannot afford buying a house in Greece or in Cyprus, l cannot afford giving to my children more than their education...So yes Greece is not ideal for people wanting to have a career or a colourful future. The system is so corrupted, the social benefits are extremely low, our quality of life is not applicable. When l was younger l said to myself that l will manage to overcome the system, the typical Greek mentality, bureaucracy etc but today l am just another pinion in the engine of the Greek system, working more than 10 hrs per day, being an exhausted mother and wife....So it's the love for my country enough to put up all these? Are two- three weeks in the Greek nature - islands enough ( because that's the time we - people in the big cities have to enjoy the Greek scenery in our holiday time ) Consider it again. Greece is not the country where the best get the best, but it's the country where the best "connections" give you the best!!!

edit*** My greetings to you Litsa! May we have the strength to fight for a better future for the next generations.

Depends on what you intend to do 'job wise' and it also helps to 'know someone' to further your career in Greece.
My husband's secretary wants to join the port police - passed all her exams - but as she doesn't know anyone in 'high places' she has been asked to give a fakilaki of 20,000 euro which her family from the tiny town of Amfissia cannot afford - plus there is no guarantee that she will get the position even if the money is handed over!

from my point of view ,things are more complicated than everyone stated
To have a bright future in Greece needs 4 things
1.Choose a profession (i mean to study) which is not overloaded
2.Have luck
3.Show willing to work
4.Right moves

1.Studying philologist ,economic,etc...is not brigth anymore, there are thousands of them, still waiting for job.....
2.Luck is something you need everywhere....
3.Show how much you care for your job,and do it well, believe me ,then they ll do everything to keep you (I mean raise your salary)

I am talking with personal expirience. My best friend, finish Chemical engineering, right after she found a job,and within a year her salary went from 800 to 1400 euros.....(she is only 23)
My profession is Automation engineer, when I applied for job, every company answered for interview,(bad for me,this profession needs experience) ,so i am not with high-salary,but soon I ll be (already have booked what I ll do next)

Be wise when you decide what to do.....

Btw,public services/jobs....No don't think about them, this is exactly what people have already described

the economical sitiation of the greece is better than in italy or in france , but is a small country than the possibilitis ara minus than in uk.
