I've done both, and it depends on your native language as to which you'll find easier; being an English native speaker made German fairly straightforward for me from a vocab point of view. Both have Latin-based grammar systems, although Czech is more complicated. Doing Czech made Russian much easier for me, but then again doing German meant that getting the basics of Dutch, Norwegian and Afrikaans was much easier. Why not simply do a bit of both and see which one you progress most in? |

German is more widely used. Learn both.
If you must pick one, pick the one you feel you would learn and enjoy the most. |

German is more useful and easier. Czech is more beautiful and fulfilling. I personally chose Czech because I found the people very unique and friendly. The culture is something special. Many Germans speak English and it is not a problem to get around there without knowledge of German. More young Czechs are learning English, but just as it is hard for us to learn Czech, it is hard for them to learn English. I would learn both if you have a background in them, and there are some vocabulary similarities (German influence) but the grammar is very different. Czech is one of the hardest languages in Europe, however by learning it, it will be MUCH MUCH easier to learn any of the Slavic languages (they are all gramatically easier than Czech: Slovak, Polish, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Ukranian, Russian, etc.) |

German might get you further, although learning Czech would also open the door to other Slavonic languages! |

If you are thinking about traveling to these two countries, I would learn Czech. You won't have a problem getting around Deutschland with English. It is much harder to try to communicate with Czechs using any language but Czech.
If you are into girls, Czech girls are better looking. And German females speak better English ... so another reason to learn Czech.
If you are into beer, both Czech and German beers are good--and you don't need to know any language to enjoy it. And after a few brewskies you will be able to communicate in any language ;-)
oh, finally, if you are not independently wealthy, your money will buy you more fun in Czechlands than in the Krautland. ;-) |

German, its easier and more useful, most people in the czech rep (touristy areas) speak German or English, and German is used all over Europe; also have you ever seen Czech? looks like someone was coughing up their lungs while eating written onto paper
Good luck!!!! |

Hello,
I sucessfuly learned French after taking a few courses. The first couple of courses didn't do much for me until I tried CDs for my computer from a company called Advantage Language (they're famous because they've won a lot of awards).
The best part is, their course is only sale for a very short time at only $6.95 INCLUDING shipping and handling!!!!!! It's a steal at that price (they course includes 5 CDs).
