As a person who is currently trying to learn Greek, I have to be sincere and tell you Greek itself is difficult. Greek alphabet is more difficult than that. But the language is beautiful and the culture behind it is just amazing.
This is the so-known wikipedia site which has a really complete article about this topic.

Some other interesting and useful sites are the following:

24 letters to the old one, Hebrew alphabet 22 letters, we use 26. Ofcourse all alphabets get originally traced back to starting out with sanskrit being the first but the Greek it is believed or has been believed to derive from Old Phoenician.
Moreover, between the O.P. and classical Greek there are other alphabets the Greek people used. One is called Linear A and another is Linear B, the 2 preludes to what we call Greek. At one time we could only dicipher Greek and Linear B and that was not too long ago. That ofcourse meant that we busted our brains and codes and eventually computers to try to dicipher Linear A. For a long time no success story came out of the attempts, then little by little some of it was calcuable and I THINK that now it is fully understand and able to be read, if not, then most of it is. Linear A and B preceded Greek in alphabetic order so the oldest for the Greek people was Linear A and if its roots are sought they are found around the Greek island of Santorini, which blew up, apart, and its still inhabited by remnants of 'Greek' people. More specifically Linear A seems to originate in the part of Santorini known as the Greek island of Thera and that is an entirely new story in and of itself which I shall not go into here and now for many field archeologists think that Thera may be Plato's Atlantis...Many also think it is not, but it does fit alot of Plato's description-just not all of it, but what can you expect from an island whose volcano was so large it blew itself to pieces we call islands now? It is also that explosion and the drawing back and going back out again of the waters that some believe was the cause of the Red Sea (or more properly it is in Hebrew the Reed Sea), dividing so that Moses and his people could cross it dryshod before it rolled again and buried an Egyptian army. Wasn't there, can't say, it's all Greek to me. That however sums up what we know about the Greek alphabet unless you want to hit the net, I am sure there is much more there to be said about it.

Hello dear!
Well, I am amazed of how much all people know about the Alphabet! Still, most is wrong, especially to its birth and history!
The Alphabets, all the alphabets were derived initially in Crete as a development from Hieroglyphics - Pictograms - Linear Aand Linear B. From Crete (who at the time was the only power with naval force) spread this to her colonies and from there to other people.
Then, mostly other Greeks adopted and developed alphabets for their needs.
Only more than 12 centuries later, Romans adopted the Kumaic Alphabet and used it since. All the Western languages are still using this.
If anyone want to learn more, I can address you promptly.
