The most simple Greek food you can make is the famous Greek salad! Tomatoes, cucumber, onions, green peppers,Greek feta cheese, olives, oil, salt and some oregano.Other tasty foods are moussaka(a bit difficult to make),souvlaki,tzatziki(yoghurt,cucumber... etc.

Why everyone is proposing always meat? There are so many dishes of oil food such as beans, fasolakia as we say, so much fish, so many sweets....
so may pitakia as we say, filled with cheese, and other things...why always the meat?

Follow the season! Summer vegetables are just starting so try grilled eggplant, fried zuccini with tzatziki or classic Greek salad. Horta (weeds) are still good, but won't be in a few weeks. The "bestseller" in my Greek taverna is "bifteki" which is a sort of homemade hamburger made from a mix of minced pork and minced beef.

Just try to avoid touristic restaurants and taverns, and look for a place where Greeks go to. There you'll have the chance to try a variety of dishes, as a different salads, from the well known "greek salad" and "dakos" to herbes, raw, baked of fried vegetables with various dips (Yogurt dip, eggplant dip, etc), seafood like fried cuttlefish, a variety of pies (cheesepie, speenach pie, pumkin pie), eggplants baked in the oven, fresh beans cooked with tomatoe, big beans baked in the oven, "fava" (mashed fava beans with onion and olive oil), a great variety of polpettes made of pumkin, tomatoe, cheese etc, fried or baked cheese, all accompanied by fine white or red local wines (avoid "retsina" wine, it is usually of unknown origin)... As for desserts you can try a variety of them, mostly cooked in the oven and then siruped, as well as yogurt with honey and nuts.... Enjoy !!!!

Arni kleftiko, is delicious,...lamb, tomato's,selection of veg, wine, herbs, feta or Kefalotiri cheese .It was cooked by rebels in one of there struggles with the Turks, they sealed it or even baked it in the ground to stop the enemy from smelling the cooking food..these days its wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and baked for hours, truly a great dish.
