1st of all you are wrong, I do not think that most of the Greek people hate Turkish people. Unfortunately some of them still hate us becoz of the problems in the past.

2nd, it would be better for you to ask a question like "Turks, do u hate foreigners?" in the category Türkiye. You have to interest in Turkish peoples ideas about foreigners if u will visit Türkiye.

I m sure all the answers will be "NO".

I love Greeks, Italians, Germans, English, Americans, Arabs, Asians, every citizen in the world except frenchs.

Good luck and enjoy Türkiye...

First, I hope you have a wonderful, productive and SAFE trip in February...

I am Greek and I don't hate the Turks. Only an idiot hates someone indiscriminately; you have to KNOW the person you feel so strongly about, to base your judgement on some factor that you objectively detest.

I've known several Turkish people in my life, and like most people answered below, we are very similar because we have many of the same cultural ideas on food, music, dancing, and similar perspectives on socializing (coffee at street cafes, walking in the bazaar, etc)...

The thing you have to understand is, countries and empires rise to power, and they forge their will to power in lands that are not their own.... this is the way its always been.

The problem most Greeks have with Turkey today revolve around legal issues that pertain to the coexistence of the two countries in the Aegean; Greece lives under a most frustrating threat of war, a "casus belli" from Turkey if Greece should ever extend its use of the sea to the full extent of the nautical miles the international law allows; but Greece doesn't, in order to maintain some stability.

Every day we in Greece witness countless Turkish planes that perform standard military drills, violating Greek national airspace....

We also see things very differently with regard to the island of Cyprus; Turkey and other countries call the problem "an intervention on behalf of Turkish troops" while Greeks, Cypriots and others call it a flat out "invasion" of a sovereign island.

To top it all off, please don't forget that Greece, like most of the Balkans and parts of the Middle East were under Turkish Occupation for nearly 400 years under the Ottoman Empire before Greece was able to fight a revolutionary war and declare its independence in 1821... So you must understand that these problems of the past are not very easy to resolve in the present, especially if political agendas on both side of the Aegean seem to want to perpetuate such nonsense behavior....

In any event, the people of a country are almost always the very last to blame for such political and historical acts.... and yet the very first to blame. What I mean is, we only beleive what our governments tell us and we only commit to acts based on the information the state supplies...... so while governments are conducting their own little strategy games and pursuing their own agendas that create more friction in an already taut relationship, the people really have no squabble with each other --- Greeks and Turks would ordinarily get along..... yet at the same time, we (the people) often chew the same stale piece of gum, not realizing ---- or worse, not making any particular effort to find a fresh piece of gum, a different flavor --- or a new perspective on the issue, if you understand what I mean. The people on both sides are guilty because we become mired in the events of the past --- and we don't realize that there are some interests, some agendas that would prefer for us to not be able to resolve our differences peacefully.

Hope all this put some of the issues in perspective for you...

PANCHO
I am half Greek half Italian and I love Turkish people. Politicians sometimes bang heads. There are a l of things our government does that the Turks dont like and vice versa for us. Honestly I dont even know who is right. But people are great. I think it was grat that we sent help to Tur during the earthquake and as if it was planned soon after we were ht with one and the Turks graciously retned the favor. We are neighbors We look virtually the same. THere arpeople in both countries with eithern ones ancestory or background. W eeat the same food, similar shows on TV, same clothing, same music. I like them and why can t we all get along? think it is a myth that either party hates each other. There are some idiots on both sides but they exist everywhere.
I noticed that Turks in eneral dont like Arabs and do not eem to have a problem with anyone else. ot even Armenians despite the fact that ty always talk bad about Turks. They ike the Armenian people in general but do not appreciate the uneducated ones that have no idea about history and talk crap.

Also an addition about someones comment about Turks beng unedcuated their litreacy rate is: 93% . For acountry with 70 million people th is a pretty good number.

LOVE THE WORLD!

I totally agree with PANCHO's great answer. I'm Turkish and I love Greeks. There are fools on both side, but if you avoid them you'll see the brightness among us.

JIM
I am greek and I do not hate Turks.

Hello to everybody!
I am greek and I can tell you that I don't hate turks and I have never heard someone telling:"I hate turks because of the past".
Don't forget that all the people(greek and turkish) have problems, sometimes the same problems,so what do they have to share?
Unfortunately, there are politicians and everything. So,they create problems between the people of the two countries.
So,it is not the problem of the past but the problems of today(Cyprus etc, someone above wrote them all).

I am Greek

for centuries Turkey and Greece have been the worst enemies

Pontos, Cyprus, Istanbul, izmir, Marmaris

are some of the lands that once belonged to Greece but now to Turkey

many fights

many wars

many people killed

both sides are taught to hate each other

and yes i admit that we still have many differences many things to be solved-
so many things are between us - separate us

but i must also admit that there are many things that bring us together-

Both our countries are connected to each other
same history
same cousin
same music
and even common words
are a strong bound

so much different and so much alike, Greece and Turkey will go on making history with their own unique way

but on the end i must add

fanaticism and politics is 2 basic factors that create hate, terror, wars and bring dichotomy to people

the simple people of both countries are very openhearted with strong beliefs, like celebrating a lot, easy going, hospitable....and so much more

maybe a journey to the 2 countries of Aegean will convince you all for this

Best Regards to all

ps. Of course i dont hate Turks..How could I?? My people in Potnos lived among them for centuries...

I am greek and I do not hate Turks. I do not agree with Turkey's politics but that is beside the point.
Good luck on your trip.

This question could be rephrased as: "British, do you hate French?" because of the Hundred Years war some centuries ago, or "French, do you hate Spanish?" because of the fishing problems!...

In the past we have had differences and it is normal to have differences as we share the same borders, the same air, the same sea, however, I believe that contemporary Greeks do not hate contemporary Turks. What for?

We are very similar as social structure, family structure, cuisine, mentality and way of living. The only real difference between the two countries is Religion but as long as we respect each other's religion, there is no problem.

I personally do not hate Turks, but am always afraid of what their government might do. I believe that Turkish people and Turkish government are two different entities, not really expressing each others' views...

bogus
I am a Turk. I don't hate Greeks. Actually we are very similar. The way we look, the way we behave and our cuisines as well..

We had a lot of wars with them in the past and they still grudge since we own Istanbul, but I give them right about that because it is a lovely city. And actually it is the city I am living in.

If you need any help, information or hints for your visit you can contact me...

Great question :-) I'm very curious about it, as a Turk..I think wars mustn't be problems for comunitcate..We are all people and world will be a better place when everybody learns living with peace.

Maybe you will come here for business but I hope you'll enjoy here too. Have a nice trip! :-)

Elsa
I don't think Greeks per se hate them, because they go to turkey on vacation a lot. And, i think that all greeks feel that, that we surely resemble in some way...
As for the wars the greeks had with them, i don't think that modern people mind, as long as we live in peace now.

No Greeks don t hate Turkish people.I know many stories of good and bad Turks and Greeks during their coexistence .Anyway if you are half Italian you know the expression " IL Turci" used to scare people.I personally think that the rest of Europe does not want Turkey and used us in the past, saying The Greeks don t want you. That is why we now support Turkeys entrance to Europe because we encourage the democratic powers in Turkey this way. The truth is that there are also other nations also having problems with Turkey, like Armenians but I think we must live in peace and make a good neighborhood

On a trip to Greece last spring, we had exprienced a little bit sour even negative reaction from some old people, when they learned that we were from Turkey. But I'm very hopeful for the future, because young people of both sides regard it in a more positive manner, as I read the answers of Bridget, Ranger and El(sa). Kalimera, kalispera dear friends.

Greeks hate Turkish policy and the fact that an Asian country with only a few civilized cities and millions of uneducated citizens that suffer also from the lack oh human rights, wants to become a part of EU. Other than that we know we have similar mentalities and no one hates Turkish people. Only the Politics
