Maybe another idea is to set aside money over a period over time from your normal income into a payment plan.
There was a question about this earlier and some ideas posted http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiKTtV5apn7Yjbnahe2BbfFW7RR.;_ylv=3?qid=20080523081653AA2dpcV
This way it's not a big 'hit' on your outgoings and if you get used to setting aside a regular amount per month then even after the trip you can carry on doing that and use the money for another trip or something else you want
Good luck |

have someone you trust hold the money for you in a safe place. You can earn money by babysitting or doing odd jobs for people. |

Obviously, cutting out some or all of the "extras" you currently pay for and socking that money away in a savings account is a good idea. For instance, it you go to the movies once a week now but decide you will cut that out, you can save a decent sum quickly. Movie admission is about $9 for one and $10 for snacks will save you about $20 a week. That's $80 a month that you can sock away for your trip. If you eat out 2-3 times per week at $7 a time, that is another $80 a month you can cut out. Pack your lunch or eat at home instead.
One way we use that really doesn't require giving up anything is to get a special jar or bank that you will deposit all of your loose change in. Every member of the family puts their change in the jar every time they come home at the end of the day. You don't get to pick out the quarters or only put in pennies per our rules. We begin saving after one vacation is over and we save until the next one in near. We do not dip into the jar for anything. You will be surprised how quickly that loose change adds up. We then use the money for something special, something we would not be able to afford on vacation if we did not have that money.
Garage sales, listing on Ebay and advertising on Craigslist if you have things you need to get rid of for cash is a good option also. |

I put a little bit away in a special savings account every week. If you want to get, say, five thousand dollars saved up in a year, you have to put away about $100 every week, and never touch it. In a year, you have enough saved up...okay, the number was pretty random. I don't think you need that much for a week in Amsterdam. But that's how I do it.
You take a second job, and deposit the entire paycheck from it, every time you get paid.
You save all your change, and put it in a jar, and when the jar is full, you roll the change and put it in that account.
Change doesn't add up to much these days, so add in all your singles, too. Whenever you pay cash for anything, you keep the change, and never use it. So, if something costs 3.50, you hand the cashier a five, and put the 1.50 in your jar.
I get paid with small checks...so, my clients all pay me with seperate checks, and I have one client whose check ALWAYS goes into that account. If that client doesn't use my services for a week, I either don't put anything in the account, or I use a different client...depends on the situation.
Every time I get a rebate check it goes into that account.
The checks for the cashback bonuses that my credit cards give me go into that account.
The stupid checks that companies keep sending me to sign up for their subscriptions, sometimes go into that account, but if you do that, you have to remember to cancel the subscription within a month, or they charge you an arm and a leg for it...you kind of have to have a credit card for those to start coming...they are kind of a pain. I usually just shred them.
You'd be amazed at how quickly the money can add up. |
