Enlargement of the eurozone is currently a policy of the European Central Bank, enforced by EU treaties. The first expansion was technically that of Greece, whose currency was not irrevocably fixed against the euro until 2001. However, it changed its cash at the same time as the founding members. Thus the first cash expansion was that of Slovenia on January 1, 2007, and the second was that of Cyprus and Malta on January 1, 2008. |

Both Cyprus (that is the part of the island that is EU member, not the north part that belongs to Turkey) and Malta changed to the euro on Jan. 1st. 2008. |

Yes they have changed to euro on Jan 1st.
Kyreniachap, how nice of you to advertise the OCCUPIED Greek Cypriot land for tourism. All Greek Cypriots would be happy to advertise north Cyprus with you but only after a fair solution in the island. |

lol look at that video.... it shows the first transaction using the Euro from an ATM in Malta done by the prime minister.
you'll finish laughing!!!!
ps. they said the problem with the atm was that the big crowd around it caused it to move, damaging it a little.
for the record, the pm managed to make the transaction from another atm. the money he retrieved (100 euros) were donated for charity- - they were sold at an auction after the pm sighed them for six times their value (600 euros).
that pretty much answers your question on Malta..... i know for certain cyprus changed to the euros too. read this article:

hope this helped you! |

Yes, the changeover to euros in Malta and south Cyprus happened on 1st January 2008. North Cyprus still uses the Turkish Lira, although, 'unofficially', some traders are happy to accept the euro.
If you like the look of south Cyprus but find the prices too high, and the beaches too crowded, do consider North Cyprus instead. You'll find beautiful beaches, wonderful mountain walks, ancient ruins, modern resort hotels, and super local restaurants, all for about a third less than the equivalent in south Cyprus. See the web site below for more info! |
