Ms Dynamite

Has anyone been to Poland before?

We are looking to visit Auschwitz during March, just for a weekend. If anyone has been was it a good trip?

Superb place to visit, very different so not really a holiday type of place. Very historical and interesting though and yes VERY cold so wrap up warm.

As many have said, Auschwitz is very interesting to visit but it is also a very haunting experience. It is almost like you can sense the death that once was there, strange.

Elsewhere however, Polish people are very friendly and warm to the British. It is also very cheap to do most anything there. We went to a top class restaurant, 6 of us had a 3 course meal with wine and beer for around £60????

So you wont break the bank and will have an excellent time, just look out on the roads if hiring a car, they drive as bad as the Italians.

Poland is a great place, Auschwitz will be a sad experience though, just to let you know..

Some of my mates have been and they say it was well worth going but it is a deeply sobering experience.

i stayed in krakow for a few days last march and we got the train to Auschwitz direct from there.

Auschwitz itself is not expensive, get a tour guide (they speak english of course) as they dont cost that much extra.

it's worth going, but can be quite hard-hitting and upsetting. its definitely worth going to see, and worth the money you pay to get in

by the way, take a big coat!! it was sooooo cold when we went!!

hope u enjoy it

Strangely enough, I visited Krakow last weekend and visited Auschwitz while I was there.

The old town of Karkow is absolutely beautiful and it's incredibly cheap (by London standards anyway) in terms of food, drink, and accommodation. Clothes are also very cheap and there's a great shopping centre so take lots of dosh and stock up.

The people are friendly and speak excellent English.

To visit Auschwitz requires most of a day (night falls at 4pm at this time of year anyway). It's about 1.5 to 2 hours by coach. It is certainly worth doing, but obviously very harrowing and upsetting.

See pics of my trip at http://www.flickr.com/photos/andreworange/tags/krakow/

Also worth doing (although we didn't have time) is the Salt Mine near Krakow

Yes, I have. I used to live in Berlin and I think Polands only about 20 mins away. My parents and I went there when I was a teenager. Thoroughly recommend it to anybody. Very interesting.

Hope you have a good time!

Yes, several times. I've never been on the death camp trips since I hear they are quite harrowing.
When in Poland, try to use the train. I have had very bad experiences on Polish roads. There tends to be a lane for each direction of traffic plus an additional lane in the middle for whoever wants it. What lands up happening is that people pull out at the same time to overtake and have head-on collisions or near misses... or, even if you have already pulled out and are halfway past a vehicle - which I would say gives you right of way- if another road user coming the other way wants to overtake and his car / lorry is bigger than your vehicle - he will. Bad accidents are things you see frequently on your travels.
That aside, Polish people are generally very friendly. The big cities have much development going on - thanks to European grants. Hope you enjoy yourself. (once again - don't drive)

yes i've been very emotional like a life like museum, make sure you go to berkinau as well it was the largest concentration camp and gives you a better idea of what it was like I found berkinau more interesting personally.

The narrow road and the forest on either side on the way to berkinau is quite eerie, try to imagine how many people were killed in those forests

Well. You probably don't want to spend the whole weekend at Auschwitz do you? The town of Oswiecim itself is quite ugly and Krakow is only a couple of hours away. Just stay in Krakow and get a bus to Oswiecim for the day, then spend the other day in Krakow which is a beautiful city.

i was there krackow is a nice and interesting town and just down the road from auschwitz is the salt mines to visit not to be missed
