I went to Zakynthos 3 years ago and stayed in Kalamaki. It's not far from Argassi and not as quiet. I really enjoyed it but you need to try and stay off the beaten track and stay clear of areas like Laganas which is like something out of a 18-30s holiday. Unless of course that's what you want!
The good restaurants are usually a little walk away from the main areas which tend to serve chips with everything. Not very authentic! I'd definitely recommend hiring scooters for a few days and touring round the island. It's quite small but has stunning scenery. I also recommend a boat trip to Smugglers Cove and the Blue caves.
Depending how long you're going for you could also go on a boat trip to the main island or one of the other islands nearby.
Oh and the olive oil is amazing! |

I am from Zakynthos so I could suggest you some things to do, in order to have a wonderful vacation with your boyfriend.
Firstly, I have to tell you that on the 24th of August, Zakynthians celebrate the memory of the Saint who protects the island, Saint Dionysios, so you will find lots of traffic and a big fiesta, because the monastery is opposites the port! Visit the monastery and have a "fitura", sweet that is sold at the streets.
Argassi is a turistic aria with many clubs, bars, restaurants and shops and the nightlife is good. Prefer it in comparison to Laganas. All I can tell you is that Greeks prefer it a 100%!
There is a small creperie, which is called "after", because everyone goes there after clubbing! Perfect crepes and sandwiches. All night open!
I will give you a list of the most beautiful beaches in Zante, so you can visit and remain -at least- pleased:
Porto Banana, St Nicolas and Dafne (sandy in the village of Vassilikos), Porto Vromi (sandy-north), Porto Roxa, Makrys Yialos (rocks and caves, that you can swim in-north), Gherakas (sandy), Limnionas (sand and rocks-north-west), Amoudi (at the village of Alikanas-Ano gerakari), Keri (wonderful lake and sea), Kampi (beautiful sunset).
Take a boat and go to Marathonissi. It' s the turtle island, but you will not see any turtles, because they can't bear the light and they always come out at night! Go to the beach, where the famous shipwreck happened. The water is perfect blue and green and you can swim in the caves. Wonderful feeling!
Other things to do: Listen to kantades (traditional songs) at the tavern (restaurant) "Arekia" in the city of Zakynthos. Try the onion-pie and the meat with the red sauce. Not to lose, even though you will not understand the lyrics of the songs, you will laugh a lot with the singers. The oldest is 97 years old! If you ask, you will find it. Everybody knows it.
If you go swimming at Makrys Yialos, go to eat at Spyro's tavern. The name is “Xygia” and it’s above Xygia beach. I guarantee!!!
Visit the church of Santa Mavra, because it's one of the very few buildings left as it was before the 1953 earthquakes.
If you have a car, I advise you to go everywhere. North, South, West and East.
Very beautiful villages are: Vassilikos, Katastari, Maxerado, Kiliomeno. You could try: ladotiti, which is a kind of cheese, they produce and honey.
If you hear something about "varkarolles", try to go. It' s serenades that happen in a boat in the sea under the moonlight.
You also have to visit Bohali and the hill of Stranis, very close to the city. Our national poet Dionisios Solomos wrote the national anthem there. If you go to Bohali, sit at "Lattas" for coffee and sweet, and especially "frigania". It's a traditional sweet and they make it very good".
For more information, you can contact me.
I wish you a wonderful vacation!

I just got back from there. I stayed in argassi, generally the island is beautiful, with very nice beaches. there are also day cruises with little boats that go to the blue caves, or keri caves, and to go and see the caretta caretta turtles, and the shipwreck. The people are very friendly and the food is good too. There is alot to do, so have a great time. |

hi
****If you are taking a cash/credit card make sure it has 'cirrus' logo on it or you can't use it as we & several other people found out.*****
now for the good stuff
look for a place called Dimitrios it's down a little cut in the road next to an art type/souvenir shop on the left hand side, opposite 3 brothers restaurant or something like that, as you go into argassi . It's family run, gorgeous food with a beautiful pool & free sunbeds overlooking the sea. Anyone can use it.
On the main street there are sports bars & loads of restaurants with people trying to persuade you to eat, so long as you just say you've already eaten they'll leave you alone.
We hired a car so were able to get out & about.
It's close to Zante town with frequent buses & if you need tour info or island info a place called Best Tours is a mine of info & they speak English. |

it is very much like your regular seaside tourist resort (flip-flops, shades, straw hats, uk papers all over but has nice and quiet bits... a wee hike away. rent a scooter. there is also public transport bus network.)
food is greek, british and continental; experiment! bakhlava, tzatziki, mezze, moussaka, greek feta and olives, stuffed feta peppers etc. all lovely. try traditional wine (retsina and krassi) & ouzo (spirit).
you can stick with pizza or kebab though if that's your choice.
people are greek and nice. it helps if you are friendly and respect local traditions.
there is loads to do: research shipwreck, sea turtles, ship cruises to caves. visit the capital zakynthos which is reasonably close. if you are up for a hike then this is an anforgettable experience - you can cross the mountains on the way from argassi to kalamaki but it gets really hot and you're better off joining a local guide for many reasons.

It is a great place to go on holiday and you will find that it has many things to do that cater for all ages. The beaches are beautiful, there are many restaurants and cafe bars offering traditional Greek food at a good price. If you want nightlife head away from Argassi town into Argassi. Here you will find many bars and nightclubs. If you want food and a more relaxed atmosphere go to Agassi town. There are also many attractions to see and historic buildings. Take a boat trip to the lagoons and you can dive into the warm waters and have a swim. Be careful of British companies selling day trips as I discovered they like to rip people off. Have a shop around and see who is the cheapest. The transport system is poor as it is in many other parts of Greece and if you are 2 seconds late they will go without you, as I discovered on a night trip to Corfu Town! Buses also tend to be irregular and don't always turn up when they say they are going to. The people in Greece are incredibly friendly and welcome tourists with open arms. Be aware of pickpockets. Although crime is minimal it does happen and unfortunately British people are usually their bait. But as in any other country including the UK just be on your guard and don't leave your bag unattended next to you if you are stopping off for coffee etc. It is probably best to buy an across the body bag so you can keep it close to your person at all times. You will have a great time. I absolutely love Greece and have never been dissappointed. Bon Voyage |
