Go. Go as soon as you can for as long as you can. Russia is changing so fast now that it is a different country every week. The people are nice, warm, friendly...sort of like Italians. English is everywhere in the major cities with the younger people....German with the older people.

Your hotel can sponsor you, as can different agencies. You get a sponsor, you apply for your visa, and you go. It is a wonderful country....GO!!

I've lived in Siberian Russia, travelled around Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinberg, Tyumen, Volgograd and now live in Petersburg. Russians are great, it's such an interesting country. I love it and would never leave.

I was born there and I can tell you right away there will be a drastic difference. You're gonna love it though. Everyone I ran into who here (in US) who traveled to Russia wanted to stay. One American guy was visiting and he stayed even though his visa expired.

We (Russians) are known for being very hospital and fun. So you're gonna feel right at home around them :). But if you go to a big city like Moscow, beware because it's pretty dangerous. There are a lot of scams going on, especially in the subways. Try not to talk to strangers (I sound like a mom lol but seriously, try not to).

For example, somebody asks you to give them change for a certain amount of money, you take theirs, give them change, then they count it in front of you and tell you that's now how much they gave you, even though it is. So, all of the sudden more people come out and tell you to give them back the money or compensate with jewelry or something. This happened to a friend of mine.

Similar things happen in taxi cabs. If you catch a taxi and suddenly the driver stops and picks up 2 more guys who sit on either side of you. No telling what's gonna happen next. They usually rob you.

So if you go, try to be careful or bring a friend who knows his/her way around. As long as you are careful or are staying with nice people you're guaranteed to have fun and probably won't want to come back :)

I live in Russia. I like it here. Many tourists come to Moscow and other sities like St.Petersburg even in winter.

I actually lived in Moscow for three years. I think you need a sponsor to visit there, I would check that out if I were you. Russia is a beautiful country, my favorite city was St. Petersburg so I would suggest flying into Moscow spend sometime there and then take the overnight train to St.Pete's!!!

expat
I've traveled there a couple of times. Once got a friend to take care of the Visa and the other through a hotel / agency in the UK. Through the agency was much much easier and didn't waste time having to go to the police station. There's lots of websites that will take your money and make getting the visa hassle free.

If you feel brave see Moscow first and then take the overnight train to St Peterburg, otherwise take a flight or go with a tour group. The over night train is alot cheaper, more interesting and you get to see more of what Russia is really like. The over night train is easier if you speak a few words of russian, have a russian friend, or bring some beer and vodka to share :p

If you only have time for 1 city, then see St Peterburg. Well worth it. Of all my travels I'd say one of my favourite cities.

Take the time to learn yes, no, please (your welcome), and thank-you.

I'd recommend avoiding the toilet at leningrad train station in Moscow (the station going to st Petersburg).

Travel smart but have fun! You'll stand out as tourist so don't even try to the discounted rate that the locals get at tourist sites.

I love Russia. Travel to Saint Petersburg. Moscow is nice but Saint Petersburg is so much nicer. The city is beautiful!!! So many things to see. I have been there countless times and still haven't see it all. Go to the summer and winter palaces. Winter palace, the Hermitage, has a lot of art annd the summer palace, Peterhof, is best to go in spring or summer because it is more gardens. Also Kazan Cathedral and Savior on Spilt Blood and St. Isaac's Cathedral are all wonderful. The ice cream has to be my favourite of all ice creams in all of Europe! It is a wonderful country! Have fun if you go. The metros are amazing! Just watch your bag:)...

Privet! Yea, I was born in Russia. Moscow is a very nice place to visit. Once you'll go there you will see a big difference from where you are now, this country is something to be exciting about. However, I wish to go back one day and enjoy this kind of experience.

The parents went to St Petersburg, but western Russia will be way different than eastern (see Ewan McGregors , Long Way Round on DVD - motorcycle trip London to New York via Kazakhstan, Mongolia & eastern Russia)
