I emigrated to Poland 15 years ago. Haven't met an American/Brit/Aussie yet who didn't love Krakow. For one thing, the city is gorgeous and there is a lot to do. Don't try to do Krakow in 5 days - it's impossible, even if you're on the go 14 hours a day at top speed.
Plus, cost of living is a LOT cheaper than in places like London, New York etc. I rent a cute, tastefully furnished 45 m2 apartment, two rooms, near the center, balcony facing east w/lots of trees around, for less than 400 USD a month.
One caveat: make sure you learn the language, or at very least take a translator whenever you're going to be dealing with money in any way shape or form, to spare yourself certain forms of petty corruption - not to mention English is not as widely spoken here as in places like Germany. I lost track a long time ago of how many people I wouldn't have gotten to know here if I didn't speak Polish...
Other than that, Poles are quite open and hospitable, so it is pretty easy to get to know people. They are very nice to foreigners; sometimes however, if they know English, you have to work pretty hard to stop them from speaking it to you without permission.
Many folks find nice Polish girls/guys and settle down here. The most famous example I can think of is Nigel Kennedy (very well-known British violinist who does classical, jazz, klezmer...). I myself didn't marry the nice Polish boy (in the meantime he's been in some measure replaced by a nice Polish gentleman), but I stayed here anyway... |

Polish people are very entertaining and really easy to make friends with. Just typical Slavs-warm and hospitable. |

I'm living in Poland for 4 years(and still counting)
The governmebt and politics here are scandlous...i know i'm polish and talking bad abput my country but i'm only writing the truth!
Everything can be done here with the right amount of money...you can bribe anyone you want!
Of course Poland ios a beautiful country to go for vacation but that's all!
i've been taken to court here for stupid things by my neighbor whos an elder lady and just because she's old everyone believes in what she says(it;s too much to explain so i'm writing the shortest version i can)when i go to court with video films or tapes of proof that my neighbor for example beat my parents up with her son..the court says that's not proof!and so do police!
And the wages here suck a nurse get 800zlotys a month which is under 300$ has to live out of that money for a whole month while politicians earn tens to hundreds of thousands of zlotys!
If you or anyone what to know more in detail about the REAL Poland than please email me i will responde but there is just too much to talk about and write on this Q&A to tell everyone how it is here. |

I have been to Poland (Krakow,Katowice,Warszawa, Poznan, etc) during the 1990, when Solidarnoscz syndicate was active. It is a gorgeous country with very pleasant people. I'm Macedonian and I found so much similarity with them. I have two very kind and educated friends there - Monika and Aneta, and if many Polish people are like them, I love whole Poland. |

Poland is one of the cheapest places you can visit in Europe. The trains are good (not as fast as Germany or France). The highways could use work. Take a train between cities if you can.
It's a very rural country with a large population of farmers. You shouldn't expect Chicago if you visit central Kansas and you shouldn't expect Paris if you visit Poland.
Parts of Poland do not have a long Polish heritage. Wroclaw (pronounced Vrots-wahv) is a great city with a mix of Prussian and Austrian heritage. After WWII, the Soviets expelled the Germans from the city of Breslau (now Wroclaw) and replaced them with Poles that they expelled from L'vov (now in Ukraine) when they shifted the Polish border dozens of miles west.
The Prussians were very tolerant and left the Austrian Catholic churches standing while they built their own, so Wroclaw has many Catholic and Protestant churches to go with its many colleges.
If you don't want to eat horse, ask what the meat is. Most Poles speak Russian, German or English in tourist areas (assuming you don't know any Polish). Keep trying until you find the one that works for them. |
