Have you been to Russia? Do Russians like Americans?

If I were to go to Russia, would they hold it against me that I'm American?
(If you don't know, then don't answer anything please.)

I know that Americans don't exactly have the best reputation with other countries, sadly.
Have any of you visited Russia before?

Three of my closest friends are each from different parts of Russia and visit their home country often.

On a general note, the tourism industry and your typical larger city populations love Americans because they spend money and boost their economy. They wont dislike you or be rude to you at all, as long as you don't expect them to speak english and understand what you're saying perfectly. Going to their country and expecting them to speak your language annoys them apparently (and would annoy me too, to be honest).

i lived in russia. they wont hold it against you that your american. as long as you speak at least a little bit of russian you have nothing to worry about.

I have been to St. Petersburgh Russia in 2004 and all I can remember was that the people were courteous. The one thing I remembered was a lot of little children begging for money in the streets. Its quite sad. But the city itself was beautiful...lots of beautiful artworks, and buildings and great food.

I'm American and my husband is from Russia. I've been around a lot of Russians and they all are very nice. They like Americans from my knowledge.

Russians don't fancy Americans much. If you go, don't stand out or be a typical American tourist, like when someone doesn't understand what you're saying you just talk louder, don't do that. And don't be like "in America we have this in America we have that" chances are the person you're talking to, has that or better.
Just try to be a bit more humble, American'ts aren't exactly known to do that when they travel. Russians are rather hospitable as long as you're down to earth. They'll show you around town and won't try and charge you and do it just because. If you're kind and polite (make sure you are very polite, Russian't cannot stand rudeness, like not saying please and thank you, or giving up your seat on a bus) and you'll be fine.
In my opinion I would wait before going, because of the recent developments, let it calm down just a bit.

They won't hold it against you. Unless you act badly or look down on them. Do they like Americans in general? To be honest, the majority do not. They're don't like anyone who isn't them (foreigners) especially if they immigrate and live in russia w/o being russian. They believe in keeping to themselves. But if you're visiting as a tourist they won't mind at all.

Why so cynical?

Hi. Well, there is political tension between Russia and the US at the moment, and although Russians are not generally fond of Americans, you have nothing to worry about if you're a nice person :) Russians are kind, warm people, and if you're nice to them , they're nice to you in return. :)

Wow, when I went to Russia, it was like they can tell I am an American from the way I dressed. They were polite and understood my russian for the most part. They liked my American dollars more and I understood why. I wouldn't say they were the nicest people in the world. But I think they were nicer than most New Yorkers! LOL But if anyone asked, I would tell them I am from South Korea or the UK. I only say that because I took an unexpected detour into Belarus! Wow was that bad! Talk about anti American. Never want to go there again. Those border guards got me scared. Asked if I was a terrorist! They laughed and said "Too-Rist" aka Tourist. Very funny indeed. They also took the liberty of my new, crisp US $100 bill too. But they didn't get rough or nasty. But Moscow and St.Petersburg was rich with history and culture. I just thought Moscow was too Euro than Russian. St. Petersburg was more relative to Slavic culture. I loved the fact that things were cheap. Piva(beer) was awesome!!! Souvenirs were dirt cheap. Apartments were great. Nightlife in Moscow was pretty interesting. And so were the prostitutes in my hotel. Talk about supermodel HOTTIES!! Woohoo...didn't try one though. But over all they like Americans. They don't like our government and our government don't like them so it is mutual. But I love Russia! They don't take what they have for granted like we do here but at least they are happy for the most part. Good luck! Poka:)

I had a Russian friend in America and not a day passed that he didn't make an offending statement concerning the level of intelligence of the Americans. You'd expect a Russian living in America to be nicer to Americans but no.

Russians love Americans and believe that Americans derive from a superior culture and we tend to view all Americans as mini-gods and masters of universe. If you are looking for very American friendly city with lots of lovely residents and tourist fun, please visit one of following cities... Norilsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Novokuznetsk in Kemerovo Oblast or Bratsk in Irkutsk Oblast. There are many Westerners in these cities and most people speak good English. Enjoy your trip! :)
