We had our first holiday in Lindos, Rhodes, in 1982, and returned for the next two years, as it was such a fantastic place! The setting (picture postcard stuff), the people, food, weather, etc., was perfect. However, that was then! It still is a beautiful village, on a really gorgeous island, but unfortunately, now, it feels that half the world wants to squeeze into it, and commercialism has taken over, with gold shops everywhere, and no room to roll over on your sunbeds on the beaches! We still love Greece, though, and have had holidays there, on many islands, in numerous different locations every year ever since. There's something for everyone to enjoy. Rave areas, as seen on TV, abound on islands such as Rhodes (Faliraki), Corfu (Kavos), Crete ("Ag. Nik"/Malia)........BUT! If you enjoy a bit of scenic driving, you can't beat CRETE for everything, from the sea, historic sites, fantastic traditional villages and glorious mountains, where you can "get lost" for hours without seeing a soul! The people are the friendliest in all Greece, and really appreciate it if you make the effort to communicate with them. They are very proud of their long history, and the fact that they are CRETANS FIRST, and GREEKS SECOND!
Skiathos is a truly beautiful island, but not recommended for "Jeepsters", as there's hardly anywhere to travel, without bumping into yourselves again within an hour's drive - it's so small. There is only one proper road, which runs from the main town and harbour along the lower coast, to the beach at the far end, and the map shows this road's location points as "Bus stop No. 1, 2, 3", etc.! The only other 'roads' running off of this road are concrete ones built by hoteliers, to take you up to their gates, when the road invariably ends, then going on into rough terrain only. It is, though, a perfect Beach Holiday destination. Landing at the very small airport, with its extremely short runway, just stopping short of a pretty little beach, is quite an experience, especially if done during a thunderstorm! A few prayers and cheers went up with our touchdown, I can tell you!
If you are looking for a very lively holiday, aim at where most of the travel firms set up, otherwise, see where they are, and find something in the opposite direction!
One year, we'll go for our holidays in a different country, but why we should, when Greece has so much to offer, we're not quite sure! It's like returning home to family and friends when we step off the plane, and can't wait to feel that tingle again!
