Millions of times and its really great. Some advice:

If you want to go shopping, go to the "calverstraat" which is the main streets, goes all the way to "de dam" which is a plaza, and then continues on the other side. I love shopping there, you have tons of shops.

Also you could check out the Madame Tussuad which is lots of fun. But if you're planning to go in a busy season--there are ques so long that you just have to wait hours (at least it looks like that when I pass by) so you might want to keep that in mind. Also I would surf around on the net because there are lots of cultural things to see.

Last tip: Go somewhere, and have some tea or Coffee or whatever, and just stare outside to all the people passing by. It's really a fun and nice sight.

Yes, I have and i thought it was great.
I live in the Netherlands so I've been there a lot. Don't listen to all the stereotypes most of it isn't true. Maybe some is :P

I went this last summer for a week and i'm going in another three weeks! it's wonderful! especially in the summer and i would recommend buying a ticket for Madam Tussauds wax museum! it's really funny! The Anne Frank haus was really amazing too! but the line was long and it rained while we waited! sucked! you can walk EVERYWHERE and it's free! but public transportation is cheap too 72 hours is around 14 Euro so not that bad! there fries are really good! and the weed is amazing you just have to do it! good luck on your trip!

It's a fantastic city!!

It is one of my favourites in all of Europe. Even though it has the whole drugs and sex side to it, it is still so beautiful just to wander around along the canals taking it all in. Everyone spoke English, everyone I met was friendly and it was easy enough to find your way around in.

I would go in warmer weather however - it is a city that you want to be able to walk around in and in winter it might just be too grey and too hard.

Yes it's really laid back, and not just full of pot-smokers and prostitutes as is the stereotype! Go see the Madame Tussauds in the main square.

yeah great place got lots to do and yes there is sleazy men and women in the red light and cafes. Just keep your wits about you and enjoys. I know a few people who have been mugged there so be careful.

Yes,for a few hours,and then got deported back to Britain for being a General pain in the neck.Holland is pretty laid back and as long as you behave,you can have good time shopping,seeing the sights etc.

I know some friends of the family who went just a couple of weeks ago...its REALLY expensive, Â£7.50 for a pint of lager and they payed Â£150 for a meal just because it had steak. The flights back were delayed due to snow [but i guess thats not always a regular thing]

Yes.Twice.Once in July 2006 and the other in December 2007.Please do not go in the month of December,because it's too cold and you really won't enjoy it.Go during the summer like July you'll really like it.If you want the best bang for your buck and meet other tourists stay at Shelter City youth hostel.I stayed there for a week and really had a good time in the month of December.Trust me it's safe,because I went alone.

i am an american. i lived in holland for 6 mo in 2000 with my husband, whom is dutch. amsterdam is a great tutorist place. its real laid back and not violent. i enjoyed the shopping for souviniers and riding the canal boats. its alot of fun and a family place as well

be careful of the bikes, they are everywhere and people ride quite fast a lot of the time, is very easy to get hit by them
im guessing you are a woman, dont go by yourself, ther are alot of drug addicts there who will approach you
thers not that much to see there to be honest i recommend going somewhere international, no special historic sights to see in amsterdam

I am American but I have lived in The Netherlands. To be honest, Amsterdam is just a big city. Yes it is a novelty to foreigners but really it is overcrowded and the streets are littered with dog poop. Don't be blinded by the pot smoke.
