I went to Dachau when I was doing my grand tour of Europe. It was suggested by another backpacker on the train, and I thought: Naaaaah. I didn't want to do anything so dark. I mean, I was concentrating on art and culture and all this wonderful, light stuff. I didn't want to ruin it with this thing that my mom always cried about, when there was something on tv about it. But I went anyway. It was, hands down, the most powerful moment of my entire, year long trip! I hesitate to say I enjoyed it, but I came away changed. I understand so much more of how it was, and what people, my people, went through. You will FEEL them, if you go. They are still there. I swear I came away, too, with a protecting spirit that stays with me, even thirty years later.
Do it. You won't regret what you will get out of the tour.
Polka and Kat really got it, too, I see. |

I had a chance to visit Auschwitz, and I suggestion to do this too :) The place has a hidden beauty full of tragic memories. Auschwitz is a old place, but when you there .... you can feel and imagine that someone was living there just before you came. It is strange feeling ....
It is just my opinion. :)
Good Luck :) have a wonderful trip :) |

I've been to auschwitz and it was fascinating in a weird-sorta-way. Very thought and feeling provoking, I'd say it was an interesting experience and I would go back if given the chance. We were staying close to Auschwitz and out of me and my sisters I was the only one who wanted to go and my mum and dad debated it until mum gave in and let dad take me there. I'm glad I didn't miss out just because my mum thought its a horrible place nobody should visit...
Poland rocks! |

James D, without doubt you are one of the lowlifes of the world, I live in Lublin Poland next to Majdanek http://www.deathcamps.org/lublin/majdanek.html and my wife's grandmother was in the camp in the war, and she told us of the horror stories that happened in there, where a 8-year-old boy was kicked to death just for crying by one of the woman German guards. If you feel this way then as a human being to another (I hope) I truly invite you to my home here in Poland to witness and listen first hand to the stories of people who were in these camps. Please do not dirty their names by saying it never happened.
This is a genuine offer so you can contact me through my email. |

it's really creepy. you walk in and you get all these goose bumps... they'll take you around to all the different areas in auschwitz and tell you what all went on... i didn't last through the whole trip. it was sad. |

Yes, I see one like it. Not a good feeling if you ask me. Make you wonder about the human race in general, yet , go head . You may change your view in general about people, and may be a better person for it ? |

It's definitely worth visiting. I've been to Auschwitz and yes it was quite depressing. Walking through the infamous "Arbeit macht frei" entrance gate is quite an experience bearing in mind that for so many people it was a one way route. |

I've never been but a friend of mine went to Auschwitz and told me of some of the horrors. I think I prefer being able to close a book when I see a picture that really upsets me.
