Yes, I've heard of this Eastern European country called Romania, neighboring Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova. It was formerly a communist country allied with the Soviet Union since the end of World War II (1945); from 1965 to 1989 Nicolae Ceausescu ruled Romania as a dictator until he was overthrown by a democratic revolution. Romania is now a free-market capitalistic democracy savoring freedom and Western culture.
In addition to the native Romanians, minorities such as the Hungarians, the Ukrainians, the Germans, and the Roma (Gypsies) make up the ethnic distribution of the country. The official language is Romanian, which is a Romance language related to Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Its country name reflects its history as an ancient Roman province.
You may have heard of Vlad Dracula, the bloodthirsty vampire from Transylvania, who appeared in many horror movies. He was a 15th-century Romanian, and with his nickname "The Impaler", he skewered Turks and other enemies on stakes. Here is another famous Romanian (a good one): Olympic gymnast Nadia Comeneci, who earned medals at the 1976 Olympics. |
