Hoca Nasreddin (or Nasreddin Hoca) was a Turkish philosopher and clergyman. He was born in Turkey, lived all his life in and around Sivrihisar, AkÅŸehir, and died there.
His deep philosophy, his practical jokes and solutions to problems still amazes us today. Even his grave is a big joke: There is a gate and a lock, but there are no walls around it :)

Ipek K
He is the best known trickester - and a philosopher of Turkish origin. His short stories are full of wit and socialogic lessons .

Here are some stories as examples :

and that is how he is pictured :

We know him as Turkish. But I have met traces of the name and character elsewhere toward the east. So, maybe Nasreddin Hoca is a tradition that affected more than one culture.

According to an unproven claim, the legendary Nasreddin Hoca lived in Anatolia; he was born in Hortu Village in Sivrihisar, EskiÅŸehir in the 13th century, then settled in AkÅŸehir, and later in Konya, where he died.
The Nasreddin stories are known throughout the Middle East and have touched cultures around the world. Superficially, most of the Nasreddin stories may be told as jokes or humorous anecdotes. They are told and retold endlessly in the teahouses and caravanserais of Asia and can be heard in homes and on the radio.
