Yes. Many, many times. Both before and after the break-up of USSR. I love St. Petersburg.

FYI: for JOHN K. - Kiev and Odessa are in Ukraine.

Yes. Generally people are nice, but last years became intollerant and to much xenophoby against foreigners. But culture of Russia is very high. The point is that politics and culture in Russia always , historically were developed independent from each other. This is why Russia belongs to the culturally very developed nations, when politicaly it still belongs to the communist menthality.

Well, I know that Kazakhstan is not Russia, It used to be a part of USSR, but not anymore ,but even though, I bet not a lot of people have even heard about this country. Anyway, I'm from KZ. Unfortunately, never been in Russia, but have relatives and friends there. Hope one day will go and visit all of them.

Yes, several times. When it was the USSR and since the "break up".
My favorite cities are: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Odessa.
I also rode the Trans-Siberian railway from one end to the other - not something I would recommend anyone doing.

And YES - I know Kiev and Odessa are in the Ukraine, but they were considered part of the old Russia when it was the USSR. I just assumed that people would know what I meant. Guess not. Thought I had made that clear when I said "before the break-up" and I also assumed that the question was asked to mean the USSR. Guess I shouldn't assume, huh?
