Check this website, where various options are detailed: http://www.seat61.com/Bulgaria.htm
Such as:
London to Sofia
It's not difficult to travel to Bulgaria by train, in fact it's safe, comfortable and a very interesting journey. The journey from London to Bulgaria takes two nights, using Eurostar to Brussels and a connecting Thalys high-speed train to Cologne, the excellent overnight "CityNightLine" sleeper train from Cologne to Vienna, and either a direct sleeping car Vienna-Sofia via Belgrade or the 'TransBalkan' sleeping-car from Budapest to Sofia via Romania.
Train times London â–º Sofia (option 1, via Belgrade):
• Travel from London to Brussels by Eurostar, leaving London (Waterloo) at 12:40 (12:36 on Sundays) and arriving in Brussels at 16:07.
• Travel from Brussels to Cologne by high-speed Thalys train, leaving Brussels at 17:22 and arriving in Cologne (Hauptbahnhof) at 19:45.
• Travel from Cologne to Vienna overnight on the excellent CityNightLine hotel train 'Donau Kurier', leaving Cologne (Hauptbahnhof) at 20:18 and arriving in Vienna (Westbahnhof) at 08:51. This train has double-deck sleeping-cars (with 1 or 2-bed deluxe sleepers with private shower & WC, 1, 2 or 4-bed standard sleepers with washbasin), couchettes (choice of bunks in 4-bunk or 6-bunk compartments), reclining seats and a bar-restaurant car. Special fares are charged for this train covering travel, sleeper or couchette accommodation and (in the sleepers) a complimentary 'welcome aboard' drink and breakfast. The train travels along the famous Rhine Valley line from Koblenz to Frankfurt, so if you are in a sleeper and your compartment happens to be on the correct (left-hand) side of the train, switch all the lights out, enjoy your complimentary aperitif and watch the Rhine, mountains and castles illuminated in the moonlight. Wonderful..!
• Alternatively, you can travel from London to Vienna via Paris, Strasbourg & the (real!) Orient Express, see the London to Austria page. However, as only full fares are available for the Strasbourg-Vienna Orient Express, this usually works out more expensive.
• Travel from Vienna to Sofia by direct sleeping-car, leaving Vienna at 20:03 and arriving in Sofia at 17:42 next day. This train travels via Budapest and Belgrade (Hungary & Serbia). Just one sleeping-car of the Bulgarian railways runs direct Vienna-Sofia, with 1- 2- and 3-bed compartments with washbasin - see the photos below. There is no restaurant car, so take you own food, water and beer or wine, and enjoy the ride...
Train times London â–º Sofia (option 2, via Romania):
• Travel from London to Brussels by Eurostar, leaving London (Waterloo) at 12:40 (12:36 on Sundays) and arriving in Brussels at 16:07.
• Travel from Brussels to Cologne by high-speed Thalys train, leaving Brussels at 17:22 and arriving in Cologne (Hauptbahnhof) at 19:45.

Special fares are charged for this train covering travel, sleeper or couchette accommodation and (in the sleepers) a complimentary 'welcome aboard' drink and breakfast. For an online 3D virtual tour of the sleepers, couchettes and bar-restaurant on this train, see www.citynightline.ch. • Alternatively, you can travel from London to Vienna via Paris, Strasbourg & the (real!) Orient Express, see the London to Austria page. However, as only full fares are available for the Strasbourg-Vienna Orient Express, this usually works out more expensive.
• Travel from Vienna to Budapest on air-conditioned InterCity train 'Avala', leaving Vienna at 09:52 and arriving in Budapest (Keleti station) at 12:48. A restaurant car is available, and a small supplement is payable.
• Travel from Budapest to Sofia on the 'TransBalkan' via Romania. The 'TransBalkan' leaves Budapest Keleti station daily at 19:45 with ordinary seats (not recommended) and a sleeping-car (1- 2- and 3-bed rooms with washbasin, the recommended option) for Sofia, arriving 21:30 the next day. It is routed via Romania, a pleasant and scenic journey. There is no restaurant car, so take you own food, water and beer or wine.

Of course! I had a friend who went to Bulgaria from England on a job and never had to fly. You can take a boat or the tunnel across the English Channel into France and then take a train from there. It should be a very pleasant trip.
http://www.answers.com/topic/sofia?cat=travel
"With its well-developed infrastructure and strategic location, Sofia is an important centre for international railway and automobile routes. All major types of transport (except water transport) are represented in the city, which is home to 8 railway stations, the Centre for Flight Control and the Sofia Airport (hub for flag-carrier Bulgaria Air). Three Trans-European Transport Corridors cross the city: 4, 8 and 10."
The site above has a lot of information about Bulgaria, and Sofia in general, including favorite tourist spots and a weather forecast. |

Yes. You can go by train to Budapest and then to Sofia via Bucharest or Belgrade.
Check http://travelocity.raileurope.com/us/index.htm for more info. You will have to break the trip into segments to search routes, and you may do better on the price by purchasing a rail pass.
You can also go by train to Italy, cross the Adriatic by ferry to Greece, and then bus or train via Thessaloniki to Sofia.
You may also want to check with a travel agency for more options. |

You could volunteer to crew a ship for someone. These smaller craft are always on the lookout for people to help them sail it to distant lands. Good luck Jack Tar! |

I believe you first have to take a ferry to come to France, when you come there take a train for instance to the north of Spain, I´m sure there are trains for instance to Italy and perhaps you can take a ferry to a country nearer to Bulgaria. I´m sure you have to take buses. Cheque with a travel agency, I´m sure they can will you good advice and help you to choose the shortest and cheapest way. Good luck! |
