Having just came back from Europe, I hope you will find my information useful. It's going to be long, so I apologize in advance!
First, I should let you know that you are on a right start with $3000 for only 3 weeks, because while in Europe, I spent just a little bit more for 15 weeks and that included a trip to Morocco in Northern Africa and Prague in the Czech Republic, on top of the numerous cities I visited there. If I can give you any advice:
- If you haven't booked your flight, I recommend starting your trip in Madrid and working your way over. The cheapest flight I've seen, which was one I took was Aer Lingus - the national plane of Ireland - from the US to Dublin and then a connecting flight to Madrid. You can get a flight for as little as $595.
- Madrid is okay, but if you truly want to experience the Spanish nightlife and culture, take the bus from Madrid to either Salamanca, Barcelona, or Alicante for a small day trip. Madrid is kinda expensive so the other cities are cheaper outlets for a greater time.
- From Madrid, go to Paris. Paris is a beautiful city and it's so modern and trendy so you will definitely love it. Be prepared to shell out at least $500 on your three days there. It is EXPENSIVE and if you intend on sightseeing and partying, and even EATING for that matter. On my first two days there, I spent about $90 on food alone, so imagine! Visit all the touristy stuff because it is cool and you must visit the shops on Champs-Elysees. And at least go clubbing once.
- From Paris, go to Rome. Rome is a beautiful ancient city that's vibrant in every way. 3 days in Rome gives the city no justice but you can get a lot done. Be sure to see the Colosseum, Forum, St. Peter's Basilica, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and do the Pub Crawl because it will make the experience so worth it! If you can do a day trip, go down south to Sorrento. And be sure to visit Capri and Pompeii when down there!
- From Rome, go to Greece. I heard Greece is beautiful. I haven't been so I have no info, but I heard it's awesome and nightlife is insane.
- From Greece, go to London. Be warned that you will spend a RIDICULOUS amount of money. If you think Paris is bad, London is way more expensive. I was there for 2 days and spent $500, and I stayed in a hostel so imagine if i had went to a hotel!? It's worth the visit though so definitely check it out!
I fly everywhere but if you need cheaper travel, for inter-Italy travel, visit www.trenitalia.com. And for travel from country-to-country by bus, visit www. eurolines.com.
Just be sure to do the trip man because trust me, it is a life-changing experience. We're still young so we should take advantage of all these opportunities that so many people wish they could have! Go for it, you will come back more appreciative of a lot of things and you will learn more about yourself!
I hope you enjoy your trip and if you need any info, I'm an email away! Hope this information was useful! Be safe man! |

If you have found your tickets for the intercontinental flight for under $1000 it will be enough, if not overly much.
It will give you about $100 per day in Europe and that is enough.
But if your flight is much more expensive you will have problems. The absolute minimum at this time is $50 per day, but that is not spending on anything but a place to sleep, bustravel and the cheapest food you can find and not even much of that. In July and August the absolute minimum is closer to $75 per person per day as most of the cheap places will have been booked solid months in advance.
You might have to rethink the combination of towns, or the route you want to travel, as Athens is a long way out from everywhere, and Madrid also not close to London and Paris. (Maybe you can find a cheap flight between Athens and Madrid and train/bus it from there?)
If you want to travel by train, http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml is a good site to see how long it will take you.
http://eurolines.com/ had that information on bus travel.
If you plan to travel in not more than Spain and France by train, and a train on to London, a 2 country Eurail pass will be the thing to do.
Or even just get your traintickets instead of a pass if you do not want to do much exploring. The train between Paris and London is not on any pass, and Eurail does not work in England.
For the real feel of Europe best not only go to the capital cities, but also spend time in the smaller towns and in the rural areas, or if you more inclined that way, beach resorts.
Added:
I missed that you also want to go to Rome, you can take a ferry from Greece to Italy, and fly Rome to Madrid.
If you want to use the train for all your travels, you will not have much more than 3 days in each town, because of the distances involved, maybe even less, as Athens to Rome, and Rome to Madrid, are long travels, (more than 24 hours) and Madrid to Paris is not short either, and for the fast connection you pay a hefty surgange on your Eurail pass. |
