Hijab ban in Turkey? |
What's the story behind this? can someone please show me an accurate story about the hijab ban in Turkey? I find it so hard to believe, becuz Turkey is a MUSLIM country...
don't u find it so terrible that people would try to ban hijab in a country where the majority population is Muslim? I mean, hijab is a symbol of religion...it has nothing to do with women rights and those stuff that some people say...? |

Turkey is not Iran or Saudi Arabia. Here women are free to wear hijab everywhere except governmental buildings where there is a dress code (if they work there). No need to make a big fuss about it. In almost every country there is a dress code in governmental buildings. People dress according to the rules their company or institution has set for them. This is not something new.
In Turkey at least women have a choice. They are not forced to wear hijab. |

It had nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with modernization. It was Ataturk's belief that Turkey should look west and not east, hence the ban and Latin alphabet. He made the ruins of the Ottoman empire a viable and stable country. The majority of Turks support the concept. |

Who said Turkey is a Muslim country? 95% of the population is Muslim, but Turkey is a modern secular democracy. No one is allowed to wear old fashioned Arabic outfits in government offices or schools. |

you are wrong
if people use it to advertise theirselves or as a sign, then it is very logical to ban. and it is only banned in government buildings where they have dress code
h,jab is personal choice but personally i believe that i don't need hijab. |

hijab is not banned in Turkey. Why do you feel sad anyway? it is none of your business |
|

Totally Blunt

You are very wrong. Hijab has a lot to do with women's rights, because it is a rule enforced by the male members of a patriarchal society.
The problem will go away automatically when men no longer think they can decide how women must live.
When I can walk around in the streets in a bikini, free of harassment, I will support women who want to wear bedsheets, ghost costumes or, in your words, hijab, in universities. |

People like to break laws. That gives them a thrill. That's why most people like to wear hijab in turkey. Its the opposite in Iran. Girls want to get rid of it. So if hijab was not banned, the percentage would decrease I think. |

We don't need symbols and advertisement for Islam.
If you believe with your heart that will be enough.
Also religion is a personal thing. we cant say that country is Muslim or not. |

isn't it sad that girls wearing hijabs have to study abroad just because they don't want to take their headscarves off? the whole budget for their education goes to european and north american countries. and then we talk about imperialism... anyway... just thought i'd share. no offense to anyone who thinks the opposite, this is just what i think.. |

Apparently they interpret "Secular Government" as meaning "No religious freedom".
That is why the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment is so vitally important - properly interpreted, it guarantees freedom from government interference with religion.
Sadly, some radical Christian fundamentalists here in the U.S. seem to think our government should ignore that doctrine and embrace THEIR flavor of religion.
Fortunately, cooler, more intelligent heads have prevailed, thus far. |

Turkey is de-facto a Muslim county but not by constitution.
Hijab is not a symbol for Islam, nor is it for Christianity and Judaism. Likewise a Pope is not the symbol of western values. Yet you will always find pros and cons.
Let´s not reduce the discussions about a religion down to
what people wear.
If it was up to public vote , the ban for hijab and anything along those lines would be overthrown by a referendum. |

It DOES have a lot to do with women rights. Women are isolated from social life because of hijab. & What is 'hijab'? It's Arabic. If Islam is a religion for all humanity then we are allowed to adopt Islam NOT Arab traditions and culture which us, Turks dislike. Hijab is not a symbol of religion it is a symbol of oppression. Islam in Turkey is the REAL Islam. You are just continuing old Arabic traditions and name it Islam. We are Muslim,I am a Muslim with faith and I love Islam. But above all I'm firstly a Turk meaning I embrace Turkish culture in which women has an active role in the society. |

I'm afraid hijab and other variations of women's covering up their head and body is neither turkish nor muslim, so it has nothing to do with religion. This kind of garment is ancient Greek, and in particular Ionian. Women in ancient Athens were allowed to go out only if covered with the "peplos" (exactly like hijab) and escorted by a slave or a member of the family. This went on during the Bysantine period and even the Emperess could not appear in public unless totally covered (people could see her face only once, at the ceremony of coronation). In both cases women lived in a separate compartment of the house, called "gynaikonitis" just like the Harem compartment...
Therfore, this is a very old tradition and it is related to the status of women in society, which in both cases was very law.
It becomes evident that muslims inherited this greek-bysantine tradition, while first Turks that came to Asia Manor did not have such a tradition, on the contrary women were uncovered, and this survived in the Turkman way of life...
Isn't it clear that hijab, burka, ference, yasmak etc are originally neither turkish nor muslim, and they are not related to religion, which is the spiritual relationship of man (and woman) with God. |

YOU GUYS WITH THE ISLAMIST RADARS
(this is intended for some of the answerers not for the asker)
what do you know, you all talk like a parrot. Hijab is a symbol, blah blah blah, You read intentions by just looking into people's eyes, or it is some kinda device you carry with you, like a radar.
you freaks are so alienated from society that you all think the same; you get your pre-digested info from radical-militant secularist "intellectuals"
I am for secularism too. But what is secularism anyway? Oooops I violated the law ( it is a hidden code from the last memorandum, thou shalt not discuss laicism) How on earth talk without discussing?; yes there is a way: talk like a parrot,, like BIRDIE-militant-secularist, and other INTELLECTUALLY-DEPRIVED "brains".
You so wish to go back to 50 years ago, when everything was secure, by secure, I mean your privilidged status was protected from "reactionist" people.
You yourselves are reactionists.
I can only recommend you anti-depressants, since there is clinical proof that they are good for paranoia too.
I say like Alpha:
Toute evolue, toute change, sauf les imbeciles ne change pas.
Everything evolves, everthing changes, only imbeciles do not change. |
