Zante of course, but not Laganas!
I have always been wondering how people choose Laganas for vacation. I am from Zante and I go there only at one specific bar on the beach every now and then.
Listen: Zante is a wonderful place, with beautiful beaches and it is also very green Try to find a place at Vassilikos or Kalamaki. I have to tell you that this year the mayor of Laganas closed everything, because Zante's rumor was being destroyed by what was happening there.
In Vassilikos there are many wonderful beaches (St Nicolas, Dafne, Porto Zoro, Porto Banana etc.). Then, you can go on a small boat to Marathonissi, the small island in Zante, where the turtles give berth to their babies. You can visit the famous beach where the shipwreck happened and you can dive or swim in the blue caves. Great experience!
Not to miss: The lake of Keri and the sunset in Kampi, the beach of Makrys Ghialos, of Porto Vromi and you should definitely do two things. Listen to cantades, traditional humouristic songs in the taverna "Arekia" in the city of Zante, even though you will not understand the lyrics, you will adore it and eat at the tavern "Xigia" above the "Xigia" beach. The best food in the whole island.
Have a look here and if you need more information just ask me: www.zanteisland.com

Malia is very much a party place ,i think far more than laganos .
I've been to stalis which is a couple of km from Malia and went to Malia for one day .
consider stalis its got loads of bars and restaurant's and great beach .there are two water parks not to far away and plenty of coach trips to them .

Well never been to Zante so can't say much about that. But I am from Crete.Since you say you don't care much about the nightlife,I would stay as far away from Malia as possible.Malia is known for partying all night long, and most tourists that go there end up drunk every night, wake up at about 11-12 o clock and immediately start drinking again. It's very noisy and I personally try to avoid it at the high season at any cost.Stalida is far better,as is Kokkini Hani. But to tell you the truth,if you want a variety of restaurants and bars I would also suggest Chania. They are beautiful, have a lot of restaurants and bars, also some clubs, there is nightlife but it isn't as extreme as it is in Malia or Chersonissos. Also the best beaches of Crete are on Chanias side, especially on the south side of the island. There are many excursions you can book from there, you can also rent a car and go find those nice beaches yourself. There is a water park(there are two more near the area of Malia) and a lot of thing to see and do.
Whatever you choose I wish you a pleasant stay in Greece.Hope you will make memories that will last for a lifetime :)

We went to Kalamaki in Zante for 1st time 4 years ago, the following year our kids (twin boys 24 years old) n their 2 pals came with us n had such a terrific time they insist on coming with us every year now. Laganas not recommended unless for a night out or two during your hols as too noisy, messy at night but Kalamaki has everything for a couple like you. Lots of really fantastic restaurants, bars (quiet or loud) and just one or two clubs which close their doors at midnight to keep the noise inside so everyone can get a good nights sleep if they want one.
The beach is great, water fantastic n the sun - well lets just say my husband's nickname everytime we come home and go back to work, is "abdul".
There are lots of lovely apartments n hotels in Kalamaki so you should have no probs finding a holiday as most brochures and on-line bookers have this place for sale.
The people are unbelievably kind, helpful and just plain nice. Being a small island we always hire a car or scooter n explore. Find new beaches & wonderful little villages every time we go. If you don't want to drive you can book excursion along the main drag which are all good and reasonable. Same trips as on sale from holiday reps but cheaper. Have done lots of them and never been disappointed yet. Don't think you can go wrong by going to Zante and mark my words if you do go --- you'll be back.

Hi I have never been to ,malia but zante is fantastic, lots of things to do and you can hire a moped and go all around the island for about 12 euros a day, lots of friendly pubs thats do quizzes and so forth, i would suggest to venture out to tsilivi its gorgeous and the see is lovely, lots of water sports and boat trips to see the loggerhead turtles, I went on a boat trip to the ship wreck and dolphins where swimming next to the boat, you can also get boat trips into small caves with bright blue water, they are supposed to be amazing. the weather is great aswell and the greeks are very friendly. you would have a great time there and its one of those places that you would want to re visit again and again, if you go you must try a 'GYROS' this is like a chicken kabab, great on your way home froma night out

Tiara
neither of the 2 if you're not wanting to nightclubbing, because there they nightclub all night, so it might bother you. i would try for cyclades, and crete but at other places.

I was at Laganas last year and thats a proper clubbing place, if u go there there will be people partying to all hours in the morning and the place is really small so u cant get away from all the noise wherever u are. I loved it but I was clubbing all week. It has a nice beach and I went on a trip to turtle island which was very good and theres a lot of good food places. I went to a very fancy place on the beach and it only cost 80 euros for 4pople having a 3 course meal and a bottle of wine! Awww im jealous now i wanna go back xxx Oh and also when I was there I met friends who were staying 1 mile away in a place called Kalamaki in Zante and its much quieter but not far away! xxx

Malia is a great place has all you mentioned but Zante is suppose to be better.....have fun!

Moonstone
Been to both. Both disco belting at night both have over crowded beaches both have never ending pubs. The old part of Malia is good for restaurants away from all the noise and never ending bus and scouter exhaust fumes. I preferred Crete for day trips. You can go out to Spinalonga the old leper colony island. That's worth going to. We did the Gorge walk and the other side of Crete is worth visiting. Go on the Cretan village night its really good especially if its not raining then its held outside really beautiful under the stars and its up in the mountains. Dont book the village night out with your rep its at a purpose built place and its huge no real atmosphere go down the street and book at one of the local tour companies in fact book all your tours with local companies much cheaper and just the same or better. Happy holiday

Malia definately.
Laganas isnt really very nice, and I didnt like Zante very much as a greek island it was lacking in any greek culture, but Crete is wonderful, and Malia is very busy and there is lots going on for you.
You will love Crete.

Malia! More touristic but definitely with more options in terms of bars, restaurants and sports/activities to do. And then, if you don't like it, you can still rent a motorbike or a car and have some ~300km (!) of coastline still to explore...+ mountains + villages...because its not about Malia..its about Crete! And it is hard to compete with Crete in terms of choices...
Then again, it is hard to compete with the beauty (and the prices) of Mykonos or Santorini... But hey! that was not in your menu..right?

Whatever your choice, you definitely gonna have a great time...so no worries!!!

enjoy!

yiotadelta
Zante - on Laganas beach there are caretta caretta turtles, maybe you can see them. Malia is very touristic and the beach is not so good.

kriti
don't think so much about it the answer is malia of course zante is very nice too but the fun you'll have in malia cannot be compared in zante. first of all its muchmore crowded and you find everything you need in the area and second all young people (that is under 30 years of age) are in malia. in zante you'll find fun too but it's more boring. don't think about it ask all your friends and come to crete
