How can I make my parents quit smoking? Do you know a efficient way in order to make them understand and quit?

When I was younger, I used to hide my dad's cigarettes so he wouldn't be able to smoke that day :) I know, I'm so devilish. Another way to help them quit is offer them to use the patch or gum that can help control cravings.

To make them understand? Do you think they don't know? Oh yes my friend they do. They wake up in the middle of night with a hurting chest and coughs sometimes. They know at least as well as you that it causes serious diseases. It's not knowing or not knowing. It is ignoring,avoiding. You can't make them to give it up. Only two things cab do:

1- Waking up one day with the worst feeling on their chest and the worst taste in their throat with terrible headache.

2- A doctor telling them " if you smoke one more,you will die" .

Maybe you can find some pictures of sick persons who died from tobacco, and you show them those photos...

I smoke so I understand them. You don't have control over others. You can't go to someone's house and THEN complain about it. That's rude (even though you are their son).....if you don't like it, have them come visit you and you can make no smoking rule in your own home. You honestly believe that we (smokers) don't KNOW smoking is dangerous??

Both my parents were smokers when I was growing up. Luckily, my mother decided to lead a more healthy life some 10 years ago and quit smoking.

My father wasn't convinced even when my uncle had a partial paralysis and then died. Somehow, iki years ago my sister made him a gift of a quitting program and he went through with it. He quit smoking, but he still recites "how happy he was when he smoked." It's annoying. Less annoying than his smoking, I console myself.

First and foremost your parents have to have the will power to want to quit. It's like telling a alcoholic to stop drinking, its easier to say than to do. You need to sit with them and tell them how you feel about this. If they don't understand or don't want to I wouldn't go visit them anymore. Tell them it disgusts you so much that you can't go over anymore. It will hurt you but you want to help them and I'm sure they like your company more than smoking. Maybe not at first but eventually they will miss it. Unfortunatly for you if they don't want to quit it will be hard to convince them. Good luck!

i wish i could help but i am a heavy smoker myself...and the worst part is i like smoking,try to understand them
untill the end of 80's nobody knew it was a bad habbit and the generations untill that age got addicted,so my kids are telling me the same things but i'm telling them to leave me alone,its my life after all and i like this habbit,sorry

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. As a former smoker I understand the urge that causes a person to smoke. The withdrawls from quitting are enormous and will likely outweigh any efforts you make to get them to stop. Stopping has to come from within the smoker. It has to be their idea and it is a day to day and sometimes moment by moment effort to stop. And you really have to be motivated to stop.

The good news is that there are some new prescription meds out that make it much easier to stop... at least it helps with the intense cravings. You might make them aware of this but outside of educating your parents there isn't much you can do.

first of all i appreciate you!

it is hard to make your parents understand this cause u are their child and to them u r kid...
im sure they know that smoking is not good for them but it is hard to quit it!
u can buy them books and all which teach tell them about harms of smoking and u can buy them books which tell how to quit smoking, when they will read all that their brain will respond to it to some extend

second thing u can talk to them and tell them that u feel bad when u see them destroying thme selves
u tell them that u need them with u always and u always wish the best for them and it hurts u when they smoke

also tell them that if they want to smoke they can smoke outside cause this is harmful to yr house environment .... in this way the number of times they smoke will reduce....

they need strong will power to quit smoking and i think a person cannot quit smoking until he want to do so by him self

Nagging won't work. Loving placing them in situations where it would be uncomfortable for them to smoke may. There must be activities you all can get involved in to keep them occupied.

Again, nagging won't work. It sounds like they're getting defiant, so you may be defeating the purpose if you try and preach to them.

Forcing is not a good way to quit. They should decide to quit, otherwise they cant.

If you missed, go and visit them. But do not disturb. You can search on internet methods for quit.

By the way, you can buy diswasher to your mom for having clean dishes, and make her happy.

You can`t make people do anything if they don`t want to. I smoke, it is very hard to quit smoking.

Remind that that they are not addicts, there's no such thing as an addict. Anyone can give up anything if they really want to. Only the feeble minded cannot give up smoking.

If that failes remind that thay you don't fancy being an orphan.

Your letter breaks my heart, do they know how much you love them? It sounds like you have tried and they are just not listening. The only thing I can suggest that may get through to them is.....tell them the smoke makes you very ill and if they are not concerned with their health that you are very concerned with your own health and you cannot tollerate it anymore so you will have to stop the visits but you will call them everyday, I know this may sound a little cruel but it just may work if they love you as much as you love them....I wish you the best of luck

Perhaps you need to let them know that you are alergic and your doctor recommends not being around any smokers.

Chances are that they will not quit until they have to face a lfe threatening choice which sounds like it is where thy are right now. If they are close to each other, you may have a good chance of them both quitting together. If not, work on the weaker personality first.

you might let them know that the habit is a wedge between you and them.

My father smoked until he had a stroke. He just loved it. He would smoke outside only and always blew smoke away from anyone he was around. You may ask them to clean up their act to accomodate you and you may need to learn to accept that there may be nothing you can do.

If your 35 I'm going to guess your parents are at least 55 years old, and have been smoking for how long? 20 years, 30? It's going to be increadibly difficult to convince them to stop. If you don't like the smell, then all you can do is not visit them. Tell them you don't want to be around the smoke so you wont go to their house, If they want to come visit you they can't smoke, or have to smoke out side.
There isn't a huge amount of things you can do. If they are aware of the concequences, and are fully educated on the medical risks then they have to make their own decision.

Some people are profoundly affected by looking at photographs of healthy lungs next to photographs of a smokers lung. Also descriptions of what it is like to have lung cancer, the treatments, the pain, the way your life is before you die.
