Best by train. Regular hourly services between 5am and 11pm both ways. At peak times every half hour.
Alternatively: car/taxi or bus. Walking and biking if you're a marathon person only!

Use the train, its easy and a good view.

You can take the train, or you can rent a car. But it is surely better the train because it is cheaper than renting a car; it is comfortable and has a beautiful view. These two options are the two I recommend because of the price and convenience. If you for the car don't worry about traveling in the night because Belgium id th only country which has public lights in highways. And when you go to Brugge, go to a traditional toy store downtown (there are plenty) where all toys are handmade and of wood. Have fun!!! :)

The best way is traveling by train. Every half hour there is a train from Ghent to Bruges and its takes only a half hour travel. The price is about 6 euro.

I am not speaking from experience, but probably by train. Check out Belgium in Lonely Planet's on-line guide. It's chock full of information.

Take the train =) Brugge has a pretty big trainstation and obviously Gent will too cause it is a big city. You can also ride a bike, which is what a number of tourists are beginning to do.
