How can the world ever thank the Russians for defeating nazi germany in world war 2?

Maybe just ordinary people of exempted nations had thanked Russians in those times... but not now.Besides today we can see a lot of historical falsifications about this subject, for example the myth that Americans are only which won the WW2 and Russians just "helped them to win"
Of course, we can thank American,Brittish,Polish and other brave soldies for they'd defeated Nazi Germany but Russia has a priorit in that Great Victory without any doubts.

For a some person who have told that Russians had never fought out of their territory in WW2, just have a look:

exactly my point. a country helps us and we do nothing but hate them.

and that guy is wrong, we found the materials and technology for making the atom bomb because we captured a bunker that the Russians got for us and plus much more people would have died

if the Russians didn't help us and joined the Germans we would of lost for sure

they should at least admit it and show some respect instead of bragging how great they were (I mean Americans and Brits mostly)

Misanthropist
My view on this issue sort of deviates from the norm, but I think that the veterans and people that worked hard on the home front are the only ones that deserve our recognition and respect. It really irks me when teenagers that haven't really done anything in their lives go around spewing absurdities like "We won the war and you didn't" (this applies to both sides...). Wars are fought by specific people, and won by them, not by some big blob conveniently labeled as a country or ethnicity.
As to what can we do to thank the brave people for our freedom and even for our birth, I think it's important to provide a decent life for the dwindling numbers of war veterans. Their pensions are measly and while they can survive on them, veterans that have no children to support them really have it tough.

elmjunburke, if you supposedly fought in the war you should have no problem telling me who captured Berlin and what year specifically the second front was opened. Hopefully those two facts should help you reacess you statements about the USSR contributing only 20% to the final outcome of the war.

SUE, here is an article that will tell you about the liberation of concentration camps:
http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?ModuleId=10005131
As you can see, the U.S. really wasn't the only country that did that. The Red Army liberated the largest extermination camp - Auschwitz-Birkenau. As a side note, due to the immigration policies of the time, many Jews that wanted to escape to the U.S. could not do so.

omg SUE!!! r u that brainwashed..lol like most americans...read more...history has many sides, but Great Russia( Ukraine, Belarus, ect.) lost the most and fought the most!!!
Ignorance is gold ...thats what u r saying...

Cossak
Just dont rewrite history and remember it.
In Ukraine in West part a lot of monuments to nazie hero's and President support them, govt pay pension to veterans of Hitler army and to soviet veterans. Its horror thing...In west country part swastica and banners "Kill moscal by knife!!!" ,"Are you communist?"...and etc.

The world can never thank the Russians for defeating Nazi Germany, don't ever expect it. In many parts of the world people do learn about it, but in many it's distorted, like in the school SUE attended.

For our part, we made it clear and visible everywhere in our country by putting up monuments to Russian soldiers who gave their lives to drive the Nazis away. Belgrade would never have been liberated if the Red Army hadn't liberated it.

I admire the Russians throughout their history, and especially the WWII period. They make me proud to be their kin and share the big Slav family with its heroic heritage.

If it wasnt for the Russians the allies may have lost. But the same can be said for Britian and America. It was a joint effort. If America didnt get involved and if Britain had fallen then the Nazi could have fort on one front. If that had happened then there is a good chance the Red army would have lost. My girlfriend is Russian and I have no problem with the people even if the U.K and Russia are not on good terms at the momment.

Seriously, no American is taught that they won the war without the Soviet's help. It was clearly a joint effort.

We would have been glad to help you rebuild from it like we did most of Europe but no, you had to throw up the Iron Curtain instead.

Ummm, as long as we're busy "not re-writing history," shouldn't someone bring up the Molotov-Ribbentrop Treaty?

Oh, I'm sorry. Was that in poor taste?

I fought all the way across Europe in the front-line infantry . We fought the Gremans until we were way bast their own country . We pushed them all the way into Czechoslovakia where we met the Russians .
If the Russians defeated the Germans , it was in Russia ,not Germany . We were well past Germany when the war ended .
I won't say that the Russians didn't put up a good fight , but to say they were the ones who defeated Germany , is about twenty percent true .

thank them not nazi gemany would have saved us from 45 years of cold war we would have dropped a bomb on berlin and then the whole bunch would have been destroyed.

SUE
Well, if it weren't for the fact that the US was the country that defeated the Nazis...It was the US who went and liberated the death camps, the US that defeated the Japanese, and the US that defeated the Italians...don't know where you learned your history.
